Apartment sat install - pedestal box

Hello,

I am in the process of installing satellite in my apartment and I had a question regarding the existing coax cable there. The cable pedestal box is right outside my apartment so this is convenient but I am not sure how easy it would be to run the coax cable to it.

The cable inside of my apartment is Rg6 so this is good correct ?

I looked at the pedestal and the cables are labeled so I can find mine pretty easy. What is the law on using these boxes ? Will it most likely be owned by the cable company ?

My other options

If I have to run the cable myself what would be an easy solution ? I am guessing I will have to ground the satellite so how is this done ?

It depends on who owns the pedestal. Your best bet would be to just bring the wires in directly from your patio. Grounding is often impossible in apartments so your best alternative would be to get a good quality surge protector and route cabling through that to protect yourself and your equipment.

Yeah thanks for the info. Couple guys and me were talking this and came up with two easy things to try.

1) Run the cable through my bedroom window which will be located right by the satellite. Then maybe place some kind of material under the window to close the gab...some kind of foam.

2) Run the cable to the front door. I checked it out and I have coax cable size opening at the bottom far left edge.

If you run it through your window they do have a flat cable you can use for just that and still be able to close the window. though I would recommend getting a couple extra in case they do fail.

As far as the box, If it's not locked use it... Worse case ask your property management if you can. Just make sure if you have 3 outlets that there are 3 leads marked for your apartment, else you may have splitters in the walls.

Does this flat cable have the same performance ? It is more likely to die ?

I don't know what you mean by leads but I am sure I will find out.

I have two coax outlets inside my apartment so it looks like it might be split with a two way. I am going to have to get dirty and climb up under the apartment , scope things out.

Well using the cable in the pedestal could be against the law depending on "who owns it" so ask the APT complex first "who owns the cable" Often times the company who is offering TV service there will PAY to have the cables put into the buildings in order to get the contract to service the complex. In that case then the rights of the cables belong to the service provider in that complex. Also opening up that pedestal and messing with anything inside it "tampering" with it could also be considered a violation of the law. Depending on your locality. Here in FLA it is against the law to tamper with a utility companies property (in which cable companies are classified as here)

So it really depends on your local law.
