Anything in the works for new HD

I think the problem is that DISH doesn't want to pay to upgrade a majority of their 14 million customers to vip receivers due to cost. Which is kind of funny that when you think about all the money Charlie is using right now to buy bankrupt companies , he could of just changed out all the mpeg 2 receivers. Then he would have all the bandwith he needed to do more hd . But I guess he isn't thinking about the near future , but the long range future possibilities developing new technology or new wi fi networks or what ever he has planned for all that bandwith he is a acquiring from those bankrupt companies he is buying up .

Well, those companies lead to other features. I think how much less my current service would mean to me without the FREE sling adapter, the FREE phone app, the simple and reliable EHD archiving. Who knows what this BB purchase will bring.

I don't think that I told you that. If I did then I don't think it is correct. I feel that the quicker they do it the better. I would like to see all receivers change out for MPEG 4 unit w/in a year. Then everyone goes to new units and they can have more bandwidth to use for other things.

Yeah, I looked further into it and I don't think it was you now. So far you consistently stated that you wanted DISH to get rid of the old receivers. I guess it was someone else.

The odd thing about the whole situation though, is that on EA, even though it's MPEG4-only, it actually has more 9-HD TPs and even a 10-HD TP whereas WA only has I think 2 or 3 TPs with 9 HD channels on them. So it would seem that EA is already running out of capacity as well, but that's just speculation on my part.

The lack of capacity will change as D* finally lets go of the tps that used to use in EA and new sats go in this year.

Aren't a LOT of the HD channels on the Eastern Arc duplicated on 61.5 and 72 at the present time? When the duplicates go away and Dish gets control of all the transponders at 72 there will probably be quite a bit of extra capacity.

I wonder what they're gonna do with those East and West beams on the Quetzsat. I forgot about all that capacity.

Not much according the nelson it posted info on that sat just a few days ago. Looks like most of it will be mostly conus (about 3/4 of it)and then there will be beams for Mexico.

Good point. I forgot about the new sat.

Another good point. That should help free up some space whenever that happens.

I wonder. When EA gets the new capacity, will DISH still not add HD channels until WA either gets more capacity or switches to MPEG4? I wonder how much of a difference 8PSK will make as well.

If Dish decides to add HD content to only EA and not WA, they better be prepared for a lot of dissatisfied customers. It would be especially problematic if Dish advertises the additional channels nationally when they know that many of their subs can not receive them with the current set up. The only way I can see them getting around this is putting any non-mirrored channels into an EA HD add on pack, so that at least WA customers aren't being charged the same for less programing. I'd imagine that would leave EA customers unhappy as well.

Bottom line, Dish needs to get off it's laurels and convert WA subs to newer equipment so that bandwidth can be freed up.

Hopefully, they won't do like they're doing EA right now and just shove more HD channels on each TP, leading to more 9 and 10-channel TPs.

They added HD content to EA back when they were only doing EA installs for new customers, period, and then when they were willing to install an EA dish for an existing customer but only for a service charge, and they didn't care that they were still charging 119/110/61.5 customers the same amount for the channels.

Won't Echostar 14 increase capacity? Or does everyone here know something I don't (like it won't be used for HD)? Any idea on when they're going to start using it?

Actually there's only maybe 3 or 4 channels out there I'd like Dish to add. More importantly I'd like to see less channels per TP for better pic quality. 4 would be pretty ideal but thats probably just wishful thinking.

Completely different situation. Dish has switched to two official arcs. And (correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe others have mentioned that) the mixed arc 110, 119 and 61.5 was never officially a Dish setup. Just that many people that were early adopters to HD added a wing Dish to get 61.5 and get HD. And with your EA switch there was also the potential cost of upgrading receivers to existing mixed arc customers thrown into the mix. Also, didn't the other sats on EA mirror what was on 119 and 110 for quite a while? I dot remember people with mixed arc setups complaining about missing HD until well after existing customers were allowed to get that set up. (that could be a result of my memory failing me here)

Adding HD to one arc while ignoring the customers of the official officially supported arc and charging everyone the same would be highly problematic.

Seems to me all the HD and national programming should be at 110-119, with spotbeams on 61.5 and 129.

That doesn't solve the problem of getting everyone on WA converted to newer equipment. There isn't enough bandwidth on 110 and 119 to carry all HD and all national programming. I'm not even sure that getting rid of all the legacy receivers and switching everyone to MPEG4 would free up that kind of bandwidth. Can anyone with a better technical understanding of the bandwidth that a conversion would free up chime in on this?

Sling Adapter and Google TV

Would bigger be better?
