Let's assume one HDD is completely empty. With Dish, you'd want it formatted first for sat use; I assume it is the same with DirecTV. Let us further assume you have a good RAID 1 hardware implementation. Then yes, I'd say odds are very good that the hardware will copy correctly. Let it run overnight, at least, and don't be using that receiver during that time period.
Expect maybe a 30% speed reduction. Which probably will be lost in the weeds and barely noticeable if at all.
