Anyone text from an ipod touch?

I've seen several apps in the app store that let you text from an iPod touch or iPad. But I've never tried any if them and I wonder if any are legit. I have a 9 year old that wants a cell phone for texting friends. But I really don't want the expense of another cell phone. Can anyone recommend one of these services?

I used TextFree when I had an iPod Touch. Worked great.
