Sorry if this has been covered somewhere else, but I haven't been keeping up with any of the news on 211's. I thought it was already a done deal that you could hook up an external HD and turn it into a DVR, but that seems to not be the case. I only ask because Dish just sent me one for free because they somehow had my old 811 still listed on my account although it was deactivated over a year ago.

211k's arrived in our shop yesterday. will be playing with them soon. its supposed to be in there man.

Sorry but no joy.

I have a new 211K and have been finding excuses to do online chats with Dish tech support every week or so for the last month and I always end up by asking if there is any news or a date for 211 EHD and the answer they ALWAYS give me is

"No. There is no external hard drive capability in the Vip211. External hard drives can only be used with one of our DVRs"

:(

{ahem}
As it happens there is a superb solution for the 211, much better than the 211k. You must set up a home theater computer though, to do the recording. See AVSForum for more.

I could have sworn when at the Team Summit in Dallas year before last, when Leslie gave us the tour of the floor, there was a 211 with an external hard drive there, already hooked up, good to go, software was working, etc... Am I crazy or do any of you that were there remember that?

You probably saw the beta SW version of it. All SW, believe it or not (hard to believe at times) goes through a long beta cycle.

I honestly done have an update for you. I have seen this in testing now for close to 3 years. I would think it would be available soon. (damn there is that word again) :D

There was a question about it on a tech chat a couple of months back and summer was the time frame given, but they didn't say which summer of course.

Hauppage has a new component input HD PVR recorder for $249, seriously looking at one for my 211. Records H249 on AVCHD format.

I hope that it comes about, but I would not be surprised if it never does.

Well, you know there'll be that $40/50 "Hard Drive Enabling Fee" to get it going...
I just wonder how they're going to justify charging you to record on your OWN drive!? - :D

it's a licensing fee to turn that feature on in the receiver? that would actually sound like the truth.

Why do they think my receiver is leased?
