Makes sense you did exactly what I did. Going from a 3 or 4 year old receiver to the flagship may explain both of our perceptions.
I do not agree. The HR series (the 23 aside from SOME accounts) give the same PQ. There is no difference in the 20-22. The 23 has a different chip IF I am not mistaken. How did you two have them hooked up? Did you adjust the pictures at all between the time either were hooked up? I am not sure about the 622/722. I thought they were basically the same too.
I can say I've had both and I prefer Dish. With Dish I can get HD locals whereas Direct doesn't even offer them in SD where I live. Also with Direct, I feel that the average Joe customer helps foot the bill for the NFL even if he doesn't sub to the NFL Ticket. I also feel that Dish's customer service gets a bad rap much of the time. Personally, I've never had much of a problem and I can say I use the online chat 95% of the time in my contacts with Dish. Sure I've had to play the CSR roulette on occasion, but I've always had my problems resolved or questions answered. Dish is more flexible with "moving". Their prices are better. And IMO their equipment is superior. Whenever I get the "please come back" letters from Direct I throw them in the garbage. I don't want to help pay for the 3.5 billion dollar NFL package or their Beyonce advertising campaign.

I have delt with D* for years and E* for only about 2.
I HATE D* buggy equipment. They've had since 1994 to figure this receiver thing out. Yea sure they have some nice features, But they still haven't mastered the Standard DVR function.
CE releases?? Thats D* answer for everything. Keep it!
Another Issue I have is the amount of Money that put into its sports packs. That limits the amount of overall programming that could be added, and keeps driving up the average customers programming cost with barely anything to show for it.
Like Premiums channels, D* customers say "we got Netflix,so we don't need premiums" If D* customer had a decent Premium Lineup, Maybe some of those D* customers wouldn't be so sour on a modest blu ray price increase. How many new movies come out a month, Not very many!
You all keep saying D* added 300,000 customers last year, well sure thats good. But that number could drop just as fast if not faster.
E* lost only 100,000 customers for Dropping Voom,Gol,Smithsonian. Could have been worse, Wait until NFL ST subscribers get tired of paying out the wad zoo. And the 300,000 new D* customers get their first real bill now that their promotions are running out.
I used to like D* customer service, Untill I found out the hard way they don't give a crap about you as an exsiting customer.
I really don't have anything good to say about D* anymore.
2 years with E* treated me way better with equipment,Programming, Pricing, and plenty of exsiting customer benifits then D* ever did in Over 5 years.
I give E* credit when AMC 14 went MIA. They still stayed ahead of most of the other providers, and neck and neck with D*.
But thats just my opinion.

I got a list of things E* does too though, That gets way under my skin. Like Channel dropping. But I still greatly prefer E* over D*.Good Info, Hemi, its the kind of info that I can apreciate, in deciding if I make the big move.
But the OTA module cost to much.I switched about 2 weeks ago - mainly for the savings. I mainly watch HD, so switched from Choice Xtra Plus DVR (~$85/month) to TurboHD Bronze (~$40). Direct doesn't really have a package with useful HD channels for anything less than $80/month.
I've had a mostly good experience with Dish. The install was kind of a disaster because my townhouse complex blocks line-of-sight to 129. So the first installer put in a 1000.2 with a wing pointed at 129. However, the HOA didn't like the installation method of the first installer. So Dish sent out a tech to put up a 1000.4 (EA), even though I'm in Utah (not the east . I checked my bill shortly thereafter and found a charge for the first install, even though Joe-Joe the first installer screwed things up. A quick chat with Dish and the charge got removed. Incidentally, I had crappy signal with 72 and 77, so I self installed two 500's pointed at 110/119 and 61.5. But this issue probably won't be a problem for most people.
I also found out after delivery of the VIP612 that it will only record one OTA channel at a time. This was a problem because I can't pull in HD from the sat (129) and often need to record more than one OTA channel. So I had to have them replace the 612 with a 722K and an OTA module. The HR21 that I had before would record 2 OTA channels at the same time, so I just assumed...
Like commodore, I am not a huge fan of the Dish DVR menus. I feel like I have to click through 10 menus to do anything with a recording (like play or delete). I am also not a big fan of the "timers" method of recording. It seems like there's way too many menus and they kind of hide the ball on some things. This is probably a personal preference, however, because I've read a lot of stuff with people praising the Dish DVR.
The long and short of it - Dish is so much cheaper if you only care about HD.
It was $30. Without it, Dish was a no-go. So I ponied up the extra $30. Over the lifetime of the contract, it equates to $1.25/month.But the OTA module cost to much.
