Another retrans fight. This has gotten very old

If you move to Houston, you'll lose CBS.
True but I would have CBS KFDM channel 6 ota ,which would still have guide data. So I would still get all my networks . If I stay in Beaumont, I can only record one ota station at a time ota using the hopper and I lost two stations: Abc and NBC .

Chad the point is that this is a regular thing with Dish. Two of my local stations have been pulled in the past 60 days. It would be one thing if this was an isolated incident, but it's not.

It's a regular thing with all of them. The only reason you notice it with Dish is because that's who you subscribe to.

I had guide date on my OTA CBS channel yesterday, but today it's gone. All 30-min., 60-min., or longer guide segments now just show "KENS removed CBS 5" (I'm in the San Antonio area). That's what's now "identifying" each CBS program that's recorded, too.Tonight's timer for 48 Hrs. is still there, renamed to that new name. Is this loss of actual program names on the OTA channel(s) in dispute a new development? From MikeD-CO5's comment, it sounds like this is a new twist. Mighty inconvenient!

Ding, ding, ding ! Amazing, isn't that ? I couldn't tell you what networks Time Warner drops .... because I don't have them. I might hear about networks that Directv disputes but only because I may read it on this site. Comcast, Charter, etc -- no idea, nor care.

I think DISH gets more coverage because they are national. However I do think that DISH seems to have more blackouts than many other providers---and I do hear about DTV and major cable companies especially in my area.. But the real question here is whether the positions DISH is taking are reasonable and it is almost impossible to tell since I think we would all agree tthat the press releases of the two sides in any dispute are pure spin.

What do I win?

CBS KFDM Channel 6 is NOT one of the stations in Beaumont, Tx dma that is a Tegna station. So it has ota guide data. ABC and NBC in our Beaumont Area are Tegna stations and they don't have guide data ,neither do the ota versions. So by "moving" to Houston, I would lose only Channel 11 CBS station in Houston ,but would regain an ABC and NBC station with guide data. So I would get PTAT to work on 3 networks and only have to set ota timers for CBS. That is why I have the usb ota tuner in my hopper. Just so for instances like this with blackouts.

Which is a prime example of why I don't think Dish is "looking out for customers". If they truly cared about the customers, they would program their boxes to utilize PSIP info. No, it may not have a week worth of content, but it would have enough to survive.

If Dish used (more of) the PSIP data, customers with antennas connected could easily ride out disputes, Dish could hold out longer, etc - a win for Dish. Why don't they ? Because only a tiny number of customers have OTA as well as Dish service. The number isn't enough to have any impact or really help Dish.

With a VIP722K DVR-
For OTA DVR recording of Dish's removed schedules: Go to the network schedules online and then set the DVR to the divisions on the guide for the channel -01 not 00 and the DVR will record that time slot but the program will not have a title. Instead it shows the station call has removed the program which is a Dish Network lie. The Program has not been removed, only the title. If you wish to save this program you can add the title back in the DVR Edit title option.

I have tested this and it works. I had to reprogram my DVR timers for next week's prime time shows manually that we are following. It sucks but this is how Dish Network operates. When they have a dispute, they blame it on the network and then make an attempt to sabotage public access to broadcast TV. One day, I would not be surprised if the customers bring a class action suit against Dish because they benefit from the break in the contract payments during the blackout, while the customers get no compensation for loss of programming we paid for and continue to be charged for.

A class action would be removed immediately... Customers have forced arbitration. Also, the contract does stipulate that "channels may be removed at anytime, including within a term commitment, with no expectation to compensation". No tv provider can guarantee channels. As for the price, no one pays for specific channels. They pay for a programming package with the option for channels to be removed or rearranged. The package, such as AT200, has more than 200 channels, so cannot call false advertising either. Also, Dish can use the defense of the channels having a monopoly because of the FCC, and defeat that argument as well. Then how they do not increase the price every time a channel is added or goes up in price, but does perform annual increases. There are to many factors against a successful lawsuit, plus it is in line with the industry standard.

In other words, they don't care about their customers.

BTW, brought up previously was how Nielsen gets their ratings. It varies by market whether people fill out diaries or if there is an electronic box in the house tracking what's watched. If stations want to go to a metered market, the stations pick up the additional cost. According to http://www.tvb.org/media/file/Local_Media_Market_Measurement_Types.pdf, 56 markets (out of 210?) have some sort of meter. The highest (or lowest) DMA with a meter is Dayton (#64).

I've suggested for years that they ought to let the receiver use PSIP data for all digital ota stations that they don't provide data for on the satellite. This can be done with an easy software change and it would satisfy a lot of customers who hate to see digital station, instead of guide data.

Thanks Chad for your defense attorney strategy. I suppose the only option for a customer to have a say is with their being a customer of not. As long as we remain a customer (which I will do even though I do have other options) I support what Dish does. The one thing I will say is you made reference to removing channels from the ATA package as an example. This involves removing Broadcast access. I've been a Dish customer for a very long time and there used to be a choice to get "Locals" or not and I never got them and didn't pay the upcharge for that satellite service. I have better quality reception with OTA. At some point, years ago the Locals were forced on me and my base package price was increased to include them. At that time it was stated to the stockholders ( I was one) that this move was to benefit the bottom line and would increase the shareholder's equity. Back then the company paid a nice dividend too. Shortly after Dish suspended it's dividend as churn was affecting it's bottom line. That's when I sold my Dish stock and bought DirecTV for growth value. DirecTV nearly trippled in value while Dish increased less than the S&P500. It was the right move but I remained a Dish customer. Today, I am seriously valuing the cost per viewable hour vs IPTV options. I'm sure many others are. This sort of game they play with the programming does not gain them popularity except maybe with the defense attorneys.

As for use of the PSIP data to get program information, I do get program info in the guide under normal conditions for all OTA, including some for the -02 -03 -04 -05 and more. If I didn't get OTA, I wouldn't even see those other digital channels as "Locals" only offers a crippled version of what the local stations broadcast under the channel -00. Not only don't you get all your local channels, you don't even see what's offered. Good trick- out of sight out of mind that Dish plays. Does PSIP give those additional channels and what's on?

Although all stations are required to have PSIP, they are only required to fill the Event Information Table for 12 hours. It is recommended that they fill it for 7 days. Many stations do not go by recommendation but by requirement. For DVR owners using station PSIP as your guidepost would be useless, most of the time.....

There's a pretty damn good reason that NO DVR manufacturer solely depends on PSIP data with DVRs. It ain't because Dish is big and evil and hates their customers...
