hi guys. i want to take the plunge into the FTA hobby but don't have a clue on which equipment to buy. I would like a system with recording capabilities (hard drive) and be motorized. Size of dish for good reception? Also, where can i find a comprehensive list of programs offered?

Thanks,:D

some of our sponsors (top of page) have complete systems for sale. Prob with/without motor. Depends on how deep your pockets are I guess.
Not sure if any of the newer recievers come with hard drive included but several are available now that allow you to ADD a hd to, haven't looked at pvrs that closely.
BAsically, read thru the FAQ section and you'll find most of what you want to know. In most of the US , a 1m dish is big enough to get the KU band programming (and there's lots to see). If you go whole-hog and want c-band free to air signals too, you really need an 8.5' dish (big dish) to see clearly between the satellites, though some here use 6'dishes for some c-band.
For cheap, lots of us find an old primestar satellite dish (those old gray ones you still see sometimes) and just buy a reciever and some cable to begin. Point it at one satellite for a day or two and see what you think.
It;s a very addictive hobby, and the signals don't cost you!

Once you know the type of programming you like, such as Christian, ethnic, retro, some sports; you can often get a program listing online from either TitanTV or the web sites of the programming providers.
