OK, I am not a fan of this movie. Yes I know it is up for best picture, but egads it is not my idea of a good movie sitting around watching someone slowly deteriorate and die. It is in French with subtitles to boot... I kept thinking something has to get better during this movie for it to be up for best picture.

The budget must have been near zero on the film. It looks like it was filmed with a couple of cameras on tripods positioned around an apartment.

Essentially it is an elderly couple, the wife has a stroke during breakfast. She gets paralyzed on one side. The rest of the movie is their adjustment, where he does his best to take care of her and her condition continues to worsen. They have flashbacks to earlier times, they have a few guests drop by to see how they are doing. The movie wants to point out that they are all alone, and only their love for each other keeps them going on.

The actress (Emmanuelle Riva) could win the best actress award, she does a very convincing job of acting like someone after a series of strokes.

The movie was just too grim for me.

Well it won best foreign language film. Technically it was a good film. The subject matter did not appeal to me.
