Sounds like for my internal wall and attic runs, Ethernet cable should be just fine.

The idea with Ethernet is you shouldn't have lots of intermediate connections in the cabling. Couplers introduce both signal and ampacity losses as well as opportunities for moisture to enter. Unless you use a POE switch, each cable should ideally be a home run from the camera to the NVR.

Make sure you use Ethernet cable that has the fattest gauge (lowest number) solid wire (as opposed to stranded) you can reasonably get. CAT6A is typically 22ga. CAT5 is typically 24ga.

What do you mean by "backwards compatibility"?

While the new compression technologies offer significantly better storage efficiency, they make finding your way through the captured images a lot harder.

Poe you don't have to use a 12v cable wire the power is supplied by the ethernet cable.

For new installations. Where coax exists, it runs a pretty good chance of being used. As shoppers we tend to be attracted to the vendors that provide what we want to use over the ones that offer everything else.

In my workplace there is a combination of CAT3 and CAT6 and only the CAT6 "megapixel" cameras are Ethernet; the others are RS422. Having to install POE injectors in other buildings is painful and it would consume bandwidth from the LAN.

It is easy to say that everything should be upgraded but it is much easier said than done.

Why would POE consume LAN bandwidth? I’d think the load would be less than WiFi.

It wouldn't in a typical residential situation where home runs are possible (unless you're covering outbuildings or the main gate to your estate) but it absolutely will where any runs are more than 150' (48V POE may get you to 100m). In longer runs you have to power the cameras "locally" and put their signals on a LAN.

To reiterate, this probably doesn't apply to a typical home installation (even with a detached garage).

My nvr powers up my cams no injectors needed anything under 280 feet poe works without an injector. For me I like simple one wire over running 2 or wires per cam.
