Actually this has been discussed before. The last word was Q1 2009 but some have said we should have had them already.

I have already been qualified for these channels and I would get them once the HD versions are available. Right now I don't want them as I already get the NYC HD channels on Dish.

Yes you are reading correctly. I qualify for both NYC channels from Dish plus I could have the AAD channels because I am in a very poor signal area.

Check out this thread from several months ago.

I thought there was no law with digital distants, and the current law was for analoge only, making, feb 12, 2009 everone in a white area, and thus able to purchase any local station they wanted to in the nation.

What Bob has heard, is also what I am hearing from my sources. The question is will Dish get back into the Distant Network game since they were only barred from providing Analog digital broadcasts?

Wow, if so I dont see that loophole staying open very long

I sent an email to AAD a few months back and they said they did indeed plan on having HD networks up and running by years end. Now I have seen no indication that this will happen . I have sent other emails to them asking them if this is still going to happen , but have received no answer. I would love it if DISH could offer distants again in hd , but I doubt that it will happen. The dynamic is different now than when they did analog distants. Back then DISH had no locals at all and there was no law dealing with doing so . So DISH used east/west coast distants from New York/L.A. to fill in for all subs. That is not the case now. IF they were to provide distants this would slow down the uplink of hd locals across the country, since they would feel no need to uplink more locals in hd. Besides I am sure that the broadcasters would create another lawsuit if DISH tried to do this. I think that AAD is our only hope for hd and I don't see them following through on this one.

This was incorrect. The law mentioned Digital and allowed the FCC to make the rules and the FCC was putting out tentative rules for comment this last year. I don't know if they were finalized.

Dish's ability to offer HD distants may depend on a few factors especially politics in Washington (obviously things are changing including at the FCC) as well as how smoothly the digital transition occurs or is perceived to occur.

I am sure that the next administration will look at rewriting the existing laws or create new one for the digital signals. The congress, run now by a majority of democrats, would most likely be inclined to provide digital distants to the country that can't receive them.

Why would Democrats be more inclined to re-write this law or more specifically is this really a Dem/Rep hotbed issue that has been brewing?

Lets not get it political as thats against forum rules, however with that said Dish was very heavy in supporting the Democratic party over the past year.

And don't forget that McCain was key in sponsoring and promoting the current legislation that allowed satellite carriage of locals in the first place.

Only meaning that historically democrats have written laws that benefit the common populace . Recently they were the ones who were worried that the digital transition would hurt the elderly in the population . They wanted to delay it once again. I am betting, that if there are no rules written for digital distants, then they will be the party that writes them to allow access to the majority of the country for now. Congress can always come back in a few years and amend the rules again like they did with Shivra and Shiva or what ever it was called.
