I am using an R16-300 DVR receiver, and am wondering about using and external drive via USB port. the manual says nothing about this.
I did see a place selling an external add on.
Also, I am wondering what size and type the built in drive actually is.
I have a Book drive, 300 gig that I could use, or also can use one of many smaller drives using an adapter. Computer finds and drive I connect via USB, but will the DVR do the same?
Would be nice if I could find more information on these without doing a search that usually finds many irrelevant items and not always the right info that actually is out there.
TIA for any help.

Then pray tell what are the USB ports for?
One rear and one front. And my older DVRs also have usb ports as I recall.
Some purpose for them, or they would not be there.

also, once again, what size and type is the internal; drive? IDE? Sata?

The USB port on the R16 can't be used for an external drive.

Hey, this is probably going to shock you, but...

NOT ALL PORTS ON ALL SAT or CABLE BOXES ARE USED FOR SOMETHING!!! ;)

eg: The S2 D* Tivo boxes ALL had USB ports that did NOTHING.
(FYI - you COULD make them do something, but you had to hack the box to do those things, which D* did NOT support)

Our cable co uses Moto boxes with several ports that do absolutely NOTHING.

As someone already told you, there are no D* boxes that support USB drives.

And it IS true that sometimes ports are put on boxes "for future use", as someone else already mentioned. Unfortunately in this case, there is still NO use for them - sorry, but it DOES happen...
