I have an extra box I want to put in kids play room. Direct TV said an additional line has to come off dish for this and it's an $85 service call.

Is this something I can add myself or should I just pay the service call?

Currently running a DVR and one HD box

Yes,
That is something you can do yourself if you are handy with that type of thing.
Once you have it run and connected, make sure you can watch channel 100 and call D* to activate the rec.

Exactly as Jimbo says, you have 4 outputs coming off the Dish-LNB (providing you dont have any multi-switches) & should only be using 3 right now. Connect using the last free output & once connected simply call DTV. Use quality RG6 cable & use outdoor connectors (usually have a colored O-ring around the connector) where needed.

this is something you can very easily you can do your self. i would check to see how many lines you can visiualy see coming off the dish first. if you see four there is an open one where they connected the other 3 for your dvr and hd recievers. if you ony see 3 line you have to get upto the dish remove the lnb and hook the wire your going to rum to your kids room to the open port on the lnb and run it straight to the reciever. like some one else said use rg6 cable and compression connectors only dont use the cheap screw on's or crimp connectors.:up

If the OP has a DVR and a reg. rec. there would be no need for the 4th connection to be used.
True. But I would hope that installers would run all four lines whether needed at the time or not.
This is a rant of mine. The cost of the extra cable isn't that much and the labor to run it is very minimal. Maybe, it's so that they can get another service call.

I guess I'm just spoiled too, because at the time I was running & needed exactly 4 lines & he obviously ran all four lines but added a multi switch just in case I wanted to upgrade down the road. It just depends who shows up. I also don't like what the weather is capable of doing to an exposed unused LNB lead.
