I've always been disappointed with the quality on the TV2 connection on the VIP222K I got.

I assume this is because it only has composite (or RF) output for TV2 - when I got my Dish service setup I must have assumed that there would be a S-video output for TV2 - the picture looks like when we had analog TV service.

Anyway I now want add a second receiver at the least cost possible.

I've learned that whether it go with HD or SD I will have to pay $6/month for the second receiver so because of this I would of course select a HD 211.

But now I learned that I will be committed for 24 month service with $10/month early termination fee.

I don't like extending my current commitment agreement that runs thru Aug 2012 - anybody got an idea on how to approach this?

You can buy a receiver yourself and install without a commitment,. Check out the DISH Store, one of the sponsors at the top of the page, they have a 211 for $119. After you have it hooked up just call or chat with dish to have it activated.

Agree with the above. Get a 211 for 120 bucks. Activate it and you are not extending the contract. Its $7 a month extra. If you want for a one time $40 fee you can add a hard drive to the 211 making it a DVR
