ABC Affiliates on Ku-Band (1998)

other than the "ABC NEWSOne" affiliate feeds (GSTAR4/T4 (C and Ku)/T5) and the ABSAT Satellite newstruck uplinks (SBS6), the ABC Affiliates from different markets KTNV 13 (ABC-LV), KGTV 10 (ABC-SD), KOMO 4 (ABC-SEA), KXTV 10 (ABC-SAC), KATU 2 (ABC-POR), WPLG 10 (ABC-MIA), KDNL 30 (ABC-STL) and KSTP 5 (ABC-MIN) were also carried on the Echostar birds (Echo 3 and Echo 4).

NHK/ABC/BBC (occasional video feeds) were on G9-TP3 which was C-Band only, whiles the rest of the ABC feeds were on Telstar 303 (C-Band), but the said satellite slowly retired the following year.

other than the Echostar birds (Echo 3/Echo 4) and the C-Band transponders were ABC feeds were on (T3, T4, T5, E2 and G9), several other affiliates used "NewsOne" for their wildfeeds and news backhauls like KVII Amarillo, WTVC Cattanooga, WYTV Youngstown (which carried FOX programming on a secondary basis prior to the launch of WYFX-LP/WFXI-LP that same year)(?),WAND Champaign/Decatur/Springfield, IL, WOTV Kalamazoo/Grand Rapids (call letters previously used by NBC affiliate WOOD-TV; UPN secondary) and WZZM Grand Rapids (the other ABC station in the area)(?).

Were all of these on 24/7? I heard back in the day every single local channel from every city was up there to grab with c and ku band. I used to be into tape trading and was told that all channels were up there like all upns which carried one of my faves different strokes. Lol

I'm not too sure about it, but those were actually the affiliates that were uplinked to ABC NewsOne (the network's affiliate news service) and their satellite news gathering service ABSAT (Dish Network also uplinked some local affiliates on Echo 3 and 4 but those were limited to ABC, NBC, Fox and CBS, since WB and UPN affiliates were more or less treated as superstations there).

to add to that Ku-Band was mainly the feeding ground for newsfeeds in addition to sports backhauls and wildfeeds (it is also the name used for the DBS systems like Star Choice (Canada)-now Shaw Direct, ExpressVu (Canada)-now Bell TV, PrimeStar, DirecTV and Dish Network).

+SkySurfer80 as for the DBS systems, I also forget to mention USSB for DSS, and DirecTV Latin America for Galaxy 3R Ku (X3) later moved to 8I. But that's out of topic for this thread, I've already mentioned what Ku was for to say the least.

continuing with this thread, several other affiliates used ABC NEWSONE and their Satellite News Gathering service ABSAT to uplink their regional video feeds like KNTV San Jose (before it became an NBC affiliate), WLAJ Lansing, MI, KMIZ Columbia-Jefferson City, WHAS Louisville (?), KCRG Cedar Rapids, KLTV Tyler/Lubbock, KEZI Eugene, KDNL St. Louis (?) and WMDT Salisbury. KSFY in Sioux Falls also had a satellite newstruck uplink as well.

the ABC NewsOne feeds came with a specific name such as "NewsOne National" (for ABC News programs like WNT, Good Morning America, 20/20, World News Now, WNTM, Primetime Live etc...), "NewsOne Extra Clean/National", "NewsOne Special", "NewsOne Late National", "NewsOne Afternoon National" (feeds 1 & 2) and affiliate feeds like "NewsOne Evening Feed", "NewsOne Franchise Feed", "NewsOne Sunrise Feed", "NewsOne Morning Feed" as well as regional feeds like "NewsOne Midwest", "NewsOne Mideast", "NewsOne Southwest" and "NewsOne Southeast".

most of the stations I've mentioned were being uplinked & on ABC NewsOne and their satellite news gathering arm ABSAT. though there's not much to see on the Ku side of SPACENET 3R (except for Oregon Ed Net, NY Lotto, NY Net/SunySat feeds and Florida news feeds).

well as for the affiliate newsfeeds, I'm not sure If the Sinclair Broadcast Group provided separate feeds for their ABC stations (WEAR Mobile/Pensacola and WCHS Charleston, WV), but I do know that Sinclair feeds their newsfeeds and backhauls on SES 2 nowadays (I can't tell where I got the information from, since I have to remain anonymous).

continuing with thread, not to mention WATE Knoxville, WCJB Gainesville, FL, WKPT Tri-Cities, TN, and KODE Joplin, MO also used "NEWSONE" for their video & regional newsfeeds in one form or another.

In the end, maybe only one or two of the affiliates was uplinked. The rest may have done occasional spot feeds for news stories to the Network but that certainly wasn't predictable and it was often handled through a third party as you've observed.

As I pointed out in the WB thread, there was no need to uplink a station absent superstation status.
