Does vBulletin offer a real ignore function vs the half-ignore it currently uses ?? If there's a full one available, can it be enabled here ??

There's at least one user who appears to be trying to win the "who can post the most each day" award here that frequently (almost) fills up a sub-forum with posts. Problem is, people really, really don't seem to care about what he posts. Well, maybe they do, but his posts typically have ZERO follow-ups. In one forum, there are are (34) threads shown, (4) of which are stickies posted by others. There are (29) threads started by this user and (1) by someone else. Of those (29) threads, only (6) have ANY sort of follow-up.

Honestly, most sites catch wind of users who post so often and put an end to it. Does this add some sort of value to satelliteguys that most users don't understand ??

Back to the half-ignore function, I'm already ignoring this user but I still can see all of his threads (cluttering up the forum). When I put someone on ignore, I expected it to make it appear as if that person didn't exist (to me) anymore.

I think I know who hes talking about and I actually like the persons posts, the entire purpose of the forum is to share information, and this person is posting items of interest to many.

If you don't like the persons postings you CAN put them on ignore, or if you dont want to see the subforums the person is posting in you can also remove those items from your view as well.

This is all done under the control panel. :)

If people find the posts interesting, why is nobody talking about them.

Hall has a good point and I agree with him.

This is a discussion forum. If no one is discussing your posts stop, because it is just filling the forum up with fluff.

I'm not surprised you know who I'm probably referring to. I'm guessing that others have "approached" you about this exact situation... I am confused how you define "of interest to many" though given, as I stated above, the threads seem to generate NO INTEREST. Clearly even you don't find them too interesting either. Admittedly, maybe you have replied in one of his threads but if you did, it's one of the few that got any !! Not sure how one determines that they're of interest to these people....

As I stated also, I do have this person already on ignore. You didn't answer my question either. Does vBulletin offer a full-blown ignore function ??
or if you dont want to see the subforums the person is posting in you can also remove those items from your view as well.
And what if someone who I'm not ignoring posts something that's of interest to me in one of these forums ??

Since they're "information", maybe they should be posted on the front page of satelliteguys. Then, if people want to discuss them, there can be a link to the related thread just like is done currently with the front page stories.

Not sure what you mean by full blown ignore.

We actually had an admin meeting about this on Sunday night and we all felt that the sharing of information was a good thing.

Although with that said I am considering an forum for these newsposts so they all go in one place. I know looking at the read counters people do read them but for some reason they don't discuss them.

I think what hall want's is the ignore feature not acknowledge posts from ignored users, put simply keep them hidden.

Hmm I am not sure, I cant put anyone on ignore, even when I do I still see al their posts. :)

I will look into it though.

Could that be because you are logged in as an admin account (that is, if you are)?

LOL, As soon as I read this line, I knew exactly who you were talking about. I don't post much on this site, but I read it A LOT and the posts by this person rarely seem to gather much interest and do seem to be intended just give this person higher stats. Maybe he thinks he's being useful, but his posts are starting to get on my nerves.

I too would be interested in a "full blown" ignore feature, primarily for those kinds of posts.

Currently, the ignore feature only filters you from seeing the ignored individuals posts....however, it does not prevent the ignored individual from reading and replying to your posts. I would like to see an option in which the ignored individual is...well, completely ignored: you ignore their posts and, additionally, you prevent (ignore) them seeing your posts.

I think this is the "full ignore" feature hall is referring to. Over the past two years, I've only had to ignore less than 5 individuals, but I found the feature of little use since these people (as I later discovered by reading other members quotes) were still able to read and reply to my posts. Personally speaking, I would like to see the above feature added since it promotes good satelliteguys etiquette, gives members the option of keeping their posts out of sight from those they deem undesirable and, most importantly, it does not impact free speech on any of the Forums.

I will go as far as to recommend making the "Ignore" feature forum specific. For example, you value a members input in the Dish Network Forums, but don't wish to interact with this individual in the DirecTV, FTA and VOOM Forums based on their overt agenda and covert thread hijacking.

I'm not sure if the vBulletin software can be configured to handle this task. Just a thought...

The website DSL Reports, which uses custom, home-grown software, has a full-blown ignore function and that's where I'm getting the idea from. Even there, with 90,000 active members, I've only got (3) people there ignored. If one of them send me a private message (IM), I don't get it or even know they sent it. If they start a thread in a sub-forum, I don't know they started it. If they reply to a post of mine, I don't see it, though when they reply like that, there is a marker saying "ignored post by user 123456". In general, they no longer exist as far as I'm concerned. Is that my loss ?? Maybe so, but I'll take that chance.

"sharing of information" that people care about or are interested in is all well and good. Posting for the sake of running up their post count is frowned upon at every website I know of. Posting continually when people clearly don't care about the subject seems like a waste of time.

i support both the ignore function and having the seperate forum.

i think i know who you are talking about. i use to do the same thing for a month or two, but as soon a couple of people pointed out that no one was looking at them, i stopped mass posting the news. most of the time the average number of views was less than seven.

i still post some news, but only stuff that i find interesting myself and feel others might enjoy as well.
