942 Lease

someone posted some rumor info that it would cost $249 upfront, then you could lease it for the standard $5.

I was just watching the VOOM DVR demo and I heard the magic word..."buy". If you recorded the demo video, it is approx. 6:55 into the video.

In one way it seems like a lot of money to pay for something you dont own but in another way is better than paying full price for it which makes it a great deal if it lasts for a decent amount of time (MPEG-4 conversion swapout?).

Has any new E* sub been able to get the lease option on the 942 (pre-order or otherwise)?

With Voom's apparent demise, this may be the clincher for which carrier I go with...

I just got off the phone you can get the 942 lease option for a $249.00 upfront charge. Upfront charge is the same if you want 1 or 2 receivers.

Gotcha. I just got off the phone with a CSR to set up my post-Voom shutdown install :(, and got the lease option. Here's hoping it's a good box...and that E* nabs some of that Voom HD programming goodness (+UHD, I want 'Battlestar Galactica' HD, darnit!)...

but you don't own the E* HD-DVR

I like E* a lot but if you really need an HD-DVR from satellite, go with DirecTV... much better value.

Buy it from robert at the value electronics for $850, call up DirecTV and ask for the $200 HD-DVR rebate, and then enjoy all the credits for the first couple months of having D*

850 - 200 = 650

Considering the upcoming MPEG-4 switchover, leasing could very well be a better deal than owning.

To each their own - just make sure you consider ALL the factors.

When asking about the wisdom of leasing a 942 HD DVR, I was told today by a Dish "advance tech" that the 942 will upgradable to mpeg4 via downloaded software. This is news to me. Does anyone else know this for a fact?

False he's smoking that Dish CSR stuff that some of them do apparently along with their coffee on breaks. MPEG4 requries hardware upgrade.

mpeg4 switch over

Hadn't Voom claimed that their receiver was going to be able to switch to mpeg4?
If so, can someone say for a fact whether the 942 is forward compatible or not?

AGAIN for the Fourteen Millionth time.... :)

The 942 itself is NOT MPEG4 compatable and can not be upgraded to MPEG4 via a software update.

Its not to say in the future there may be a swap where they send you a new 942 with MPEG4 and you send back your old receiver.

Thank you Scott.
(Too bad you don't have a FAQ Thread for each forum... or do you and I've just missed the fact?)

What are the chances of getting a swap from a 921 to a MPEG 4 942!?!?!?!? :D

I was told no to a lease plan at first because I backed away from my Digital Home Plan on 1/07/05 to go voOm.But after discussing Direct's $200 rebate and a transfer to a CSR specialist, was told yes to a $250 DVR921 w/2yr commitment. But after calling back later in the evening to a add a SD receiver for bedroom was told I'm not getting 921 but 942 ! Install was delayed a week while I await the 942 which is being shipped to me direct. Make it so Dish

942 arrived today via UPS. Install scheduled for my day off 5/12. Way to go Dish, but why not one for everyone who wants it? Don't give up guys this unit can be got.
