942 and DVD Recorder question

I have three questions. First I have a 942 and wanted to know if it is possible to hook up a DVD Recorder to a 942. I would like to record the shows from the hard drive of the 942 and place them on to DVD. If this is possible would I still be able to use my HDMI cable that runs from the 942 to myTV? I was afraid that the HDMI cable would not allow me to copy shows since it has the copyright protection problem.

And the third question is a little off topic but I don’t know where to post this. I had Direct TV two days ago. I switched to Dish Network and noticed that on the Sci-Fi channel Friday night with Dish Network the shows Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battle Star, were all reruns. But with Direct TV the same shows were all new episodes. How can that be, are there more that one Sci-Fi channels? Is Dish a few weeks behind? I am very confused on that issue.

Go to the dbstalk.com forum and go the thread on 942 support. But don't refer to it as recording from the hard drive as I think that is illegal. However there is nothing preventing you from copying from the outputs of the 942 using component. In fact there is considerable discussion on making anamorphic DVD's from the 942 using component.

I think he meant composite not component. Some DVD recorders have component input but I believe they don't accept progressive format for input sources. You could set the 942 for 480i mode but because the 942 only has one set of component outputs your DVD recorder will have to be on all the time to allow feedthru function. If you want to view HD from the 942 you'd have to switch out the DVD recorder everytime. Therefore for less hassles the composite (sorry no s-video on the 942) or (UHF )TV2 output would be the easier choice.

Or... use HDMI for video output to the TV and Component to the DVD recorder. I verified at one point that both the HDMI and component outputs were simulaneous (ditto stereo outputs at the same time as the digital optical output).

I think you're right that DVD-Recorders that have component input will only record at 480i, necessitating a change of settings on the 942, but if your TV takes a digital video signal then there wouldn't be any need to switch cables around.

Good to know that both component and digital outputs are active on the 942. Personally I have the 921 so I can't use component when the DVI-I connector is in use. Also those outputs share the same audio and I don't have a digital dolby receiver at this time. The composite/s-video is the easiest (most convienent) way to record to my DVD recorder but even then I must toggle the HD/SD button on the 921 (or remote) and also change video input selector on my TV to component #1 instead of DVI.
