922 News

Makes sense if you are trying to do away with the 922 and you want your existing subs to upgrade to the hopper/joey system. DISH gets much more average revenue per sub with those hopper accounts than the older Vip system. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if DISH decided to hike the dvr fee on the Vip receivers next in order to push them to upgrade too. They already hiked the Vip dvr fee from $6.00 to $7.00 like last year. They could easily push the dvr fee to the same as the hopper at $12.00. Then most would say what is the point keeping the older system if I pay as much as the hopper and don't get as much in functionality. Of course once they do the upgrade to the hopper, they find out they need the joey for the 2nd room to see in hd and there is another $7.00 that DISH got out of the sub. So from Vip $7.00 monthly fee to $19.00 for the same two room system with the Hopper and one joey. I can see DISH doing this easily come February or in the near future like June, after the annual February price hike. IN the past they have done this exact thing : a price hike in February and another equipment or dvr fee change come June .

The DVR fee for a 922 is $10 a month and I cannot agree with your theory, because when I was being migrated to the Eastern Arc I had a conversation with a CSR about upgrading to the Hopper system and the CSR advised me against it. She told me the Hopper system isn't for every customer and my needs did not seem to warrant an upgrade. At the time I had a 922 and a 211K on my account. I am now happy that I did not go with the upgrade, because the migration to the Eastern Arc was a nightmare for my signal levels and even with two tech visits they could never get my levels where they should be and I became frustrated over rain fade when ever it drizzled and I pulled the plug and went OTA for the remainder of the summer.

I think it was about two years ago when they increased the DVR fee to $7. I don't see Dish making any VIP fee increases soon but it wouldn't surprise me if they did. It's very obvious that Dish is trying to push as many customers to the Hopper system as they can. Dish feels they can be more profitable with Hopper customers and they also feel those customers will stay much longer. I believe a lot of that is true but I think they will end up leaving behind a lot of customers that can not afford the Hopper or just plain don't need the Hopper. Many of us retailers have already voiced our opinions on this subject with Dish.

I think ultimately, they just want the 922 to disappear. It has been their biggest failure, in the last few years. It has been taken off the shelves and put back after "fixes", way to many times, and at this point if you want a duo receiver go 722, if you want the new GUI go hopper. I don't think its encouragement more one way, just an encouragement for people to not buy a 922 anymore.

I got an email from Dish Depot yesterday talking about Dish disabling the sling capability on the 922 & started a thread on it not knowing that this one already existed. Anyway,if this has already been discussed then point me to the appropriate post, but what's to stop Dish from disabling the Sling adapters for the 722/722k's,if you've never had one attached to them before? The same question goes for the Hopper 2000.

It's more them trying to stop the 922 from even going out. That receiver has been a general POS since release.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is what would keep Dish from disabling the red sling adapters so that if you are a new customer or someone buying a new receiver(like a 722/722k or a Hopper 2000),the only way you could have sling capability is if you bought a Hopper with Sling?

So Dish Depot is trying to sell off their stock before they become even more worthless. I imagine you can still attach the red sling adapter to it to work around Dish disabling the new purchase 922's after Nov. 13.

That's my assumption. And I don't see them doing that. I mean, nothing stops them really, from doing a lot of things, except customer satisfaction. And the 922 won't affect that customer satisfaction, in a number that will be relevant. They aren't disabling it from existing 922 subscribers, just new 922s after the 13th I beleive the date was, being activated. Replacement 922s are not affected by this either. That way, as people cancel, or upgrade, it will slowly remove those peices if crap, off the market.

I don't think anything is stopping them. Dish has always had the ability to add or take away any feature at any time they want. Lets hope that they don't.

Go to that closet shelf, move the 921 over. Move the 942 over. Make space now for the ViP922.

Except the 921 and 942 are actually worthless. They can't get any MPEG-4 programming.

While the 922 can still receive all programming that is available, including on demand, and 1080p.

When I wanted to subscribe to DISH without a contract back in January, brand new 722 receivers were not available (refurbs weren't really available either, mostly just "used" stuff). I actually purchased, as far as I can tell, a brand new, not refurbished 922.

I really don't see what's so special about the hooper that it gets them a better customer.

I agree any customer who has a DVR is more likely to stay, but don't see how the hopper would make that much of a difference.

You would think a customer who bought their own 922 would stay longer than customers who where given free Hopker.

The 921 was junk. The 942 on the other hand was a rock solid DVR. Too bad it didn't do MPEG4.

I kept my 942 until they shut it down. At first they wanted to give me a 625, but I made them give me a 622 when they Finally forced me to swap it out.

A customer that gets the Hopper and uses it features and fills their hard drive full of their favorite shows is very unlikely to switch to another provider because they do not want to give up what they have. The average Hopper customer is most likely to stay with Dish for quite a while. The problem is that the Hopper is not for everyone. Not everyone can afford to upgrade to the Hopper. Sometimes a customer with a 722k mirrored to their extra TVs can be a very long term customer. The problem with that customer is that Dish is most likely not making a lot of money off them per month.

I tried to upgrade my mom when she was adding another two rooms to a 922. She had a 722 1nd 211. Never happened. Tried to do it when the tech arrived and had a 922 on his truck and the CSR was just plain rude saying "can't you take a hint? It's not available for you!" lol. I wanted a 922 when I started my service but they said the Hopper was a better system. Now I know why. Because it costs more!!!

Or the system just did not allow it, for leased equipment. It's been like that for quite a while now. Purchased only. I don't think its necessarily because they want you to go to a hopper(although they wouldn't be against it, for continuity and price reasons), but to try and push as many of those away from consumers as possible. If they want the 922 to die out, then of course they will not allow it, whether you stay with 722 or upgrade.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but I actually had a CSR talk me out of upgrading to a Hopper from a 922/211 system, so it's not always about the money!
