722K and OTA

ONE thing I don't like on my Tivo, that IS available on Dish's VIP722k: Tivo doesn't allow you to re-label your OTA channels. Such as my channel 5-3 being Cozi, etc. Dish does allow this, and it's easy to do...

Otherwise I find my Roamio to be very much the same experience as my Dish 722k, but with added internet streaming and such.

His point being, a lifetimed Tivo has ZERO monthly costs, while DISH Welcome Pak is going to cost at LEAST $20/month forever...& that's NOT even including the $7 DVR fee.
Costs are a funny thing. One of them that is often ignored in such discussions is known as "opportunity cost". If you can afford pay TV, you can afford a TiVo but if you can't afford pay TV, you're leaning pretty hard on your savings to pop for a $300+ up front investment for the eventual savings.

Of course this also assumes that OTA reception will remain constant and you don't end up living some place that doesn't offer it (like an apartment or condo).

One of the other things often ignored, is the "value" some people are getting out of paying an ongoing monthly fee(s) for a service they really don't care about. Some people (many, actually) would consider that ONLY having to pay $300 ONE-TIME, for complete DVR functionality for probably YEARS, (as long as the box lasts) is a MUCH better value, than paying E* $27+ a month FOREVER for like service. (& this IS assuming that E* NEVER decides to raise these prices...which most likely they WILL, if history is any indication...) The whole point of this, is that the reason why people are dropping pay TV is NOT just because they can't afford it...it's that they are NOT getting the "value" for themselves, of paying for (cable) channels they simply don't watch.

Of course this also assumes that OTA reception will remain constant and you don't end up living some place that doesn't offer it (like an apartment or condo).

Well yea, of course...

We do have to remember that in the big picture, there are quite a bit fewer people able to get OTA since the DTV conversion and with the RF frequencies being scavenged for gubmint revenue there will come a saturation point where the bandwidth will come down to squeeze the usage.

Then there's the issue of how short-lived modern consumer equipment is getting. What was once something that should last for 20 years is now lasting 5-7 years and, more often than not, can't reasonably be repaired.

Uh, OK, & (again) then obviously an OTA Tivo is NOT a good option in those cases...

OK, so (again) figuring the payback on buying a complete $300 OTA Tivo...with NO ONGOING FEES WHATSOEVER - is about 1 year on our above comparisons. That's STILL 4+ years of NO MONTHLY FEES WHATSOEVER to watch &/or DVR network TV...I guess I don't see the problem in this???

I just looked at my list of timers and I was surprised to find 40 out 0f 45 timers I have set are for OTA/DISH delivered OTA programming. What I have for Satellite delivered programs is for channels in reruns or on hiatus. I am going to take a serious look at upgrading my TiVo and discontinuing my DISH. I actually thought I was watching more on DISH. I may be wasting more of my money than I thought.

That was same thing I noticed, and what led me to Tivos.

Edit. And the lack of guide info for subchannels

I'm about ready to grab another one of these; at only $300, it's almost too good for me to pass up.
I know that Tivo is about ready to come out with something "newer & better"...but quite frankly, I could care less about having every, single TV app baked in my DVR box, playing music or things off my PC, etc.
All I want IS a reliable DVR that comes with complete guide data...AND still gives me 30-sec skip ahead! (probably THE most important feature, for myself anyway)
