I had my 211 replaced with a 622. The 211 stretched SD content to 16X9 easily.

I have the 622 set up to show 16X9, but all SD content has those black bars on the sides. What setting do I need to change to do that?

Ahh, I'm an idiot for forgetting the format button on the remote. Thanks!! :o

Really...how can you possibly watch a TV show with everyone looking like an umpa-lumpa? It is beyond rational explanation how some people who are after the best possible looking picture will VOLUNTARILY distort a perfectly clear image in order to make it fit their screen dimensions. This is exactly the reason why many bitch about TNT HD because that is what they do to their SD or 4x3 content.

Oh well... at least *I* won't have to look at it. :D

Some people have HDTV's that are susceptible to burn-in and don't want that to happen so they use the stretch function.

My panasonic plasma has a "Just" mode that stretches teh edges but not the middle.... or at least that's the illusion.

Something round in the middle of the TV still looks round... if it moves to the left or right edges it gets stretched. (and therefore is no longer round). I don't mind watching stuff in that mode mostly because I hate the sidebars.

If I am understanding correctly, once I move to the 622, I won't have this option any more. Is that correct?

No. That is not correct. If you are looking at an SD channel you can still use the TV "distort-o-vision" features. :) They may differ a little. But the 622 has its own "distort-o-vision" selection.

BTW just about every TV manufacturer has their own "distort-o-vision" like the one you describe. The Toshiba I have look fair and the Hitachi not quite as fair.

I just can't look at a picture that is distorted in any way after paying the money I did to get the best PQ possible. :)

Now the one feature I wish TVs had is what Fox does to American Idol SD footage!

I have also seen some expesnive plasmas that have an algorythm of some sort that not only have the side bars change brightness with corresponding to what is on the main screen (my Hitachi does this now), but it also changes the side bar colors to match the basic colors on the program. Now that is cool!

Because when I look in a mirror after I look "thin". ;)

Burn in is not a problem if the display is properly calibrated and not left in torch mode like the manufacturers ship them.

YES!!!

I'm with you, Tony. I simply cannot understand purposely watching a distored image (and I have a 50" Plasma). Won't do it.....use the grey bar mode if you're worried about burn-in....

And if it is a Rear Projection, there's no such thing.

Does anyone know if there is anyway to disable this feature? The 16x9 stretch mode on my TV is much better than any of the modes on the 622.

And -- I did the same thing -- went through every menu on the TV and on the receiver before I thought to try the button on the remote.

I don't understand--there's no such thing as not getting burn-in--even with the gray sidebars?

I use "partial zoom"--people look a little stouter than usual, but I already have some burn-in of the pause bar  , so I deem watching that mode my best choice.

When watching HD programs, then "normal" fills the screen.

Only CRT's and plasmas experience burn-in - the fatugue of the phosphores on the screen surface. (some older LCD's show age, but not the same phenomenon)

The idea is to fatigue the whole screen evenly as possible avoiding dark and light spots in the display.

Eventually the blue and green phosphors will age and give a yellow cast to the picture, but if you keep your brightness and contrast below 50% you can delay the aging as long as possible.
