Well, just before christmas I got the hard disk error message on my 622. I tried rebooting and all it did was click repeatedly when it tried to access the hard drive. So, I called and they sent a replacement which showed up on the 28th. However, my original 622 fixed itself that same day! To test the original one I tried a soft reset and it was fine. Then I tried unplugging and plugging it back in. It did the clicking and gave me the hard disk error message again. The next day, probably after the 3 am update, it was ok again.
The original one has worked flawlessly for the year I have had it. I have a seond 622 upstairs that I got at the same time that has been replaced twice already ... hdmi stopped working one one and the other did a constant reboot thing.

What would you do? Take a chance on the original one or change it out for the replacement figuring there must be some kind of problem with the hard disk?

Change out and use the replacement. Also make sure that all your receivers are well ventilated and get lots of air . This will cause all kinds of problems for your hard drives , like clicking and hard drive failures. Mine are all in well open cabinets with nothing on top or underneath them but air space.

Most of will presume that the OP is concerned about having DVR functionality not whether or not it boots. If the HDD in my DVR dies, I do not want it. I want it replaced and don't care if it still works like a non-DVR receiver (though I would take advantage of that fact while waiting for the replacement).

Of course I want my DVR to operate as a DVR. My instincts were to replace it. My resistance is that I don't want to end up in an endless replacement cycle. I'm going to swap it out today and hope for the best. At least I got to remove the recordings to an external HD.

All of my receivers are in open areas.

Good luck. I hope your external unit isn't a WD 500 mybook. I have one that's failed on me.

622 not picking up any locals

Camera in USB...used to work but not now.
