I don't think a re-point is necessary due to the close proximity of the birds. The current thinking is that the current sat will be moved out of the slot to serve as a backup somewhere.

BTW...the new sat is AMC-14, and has a launch date of 3/14, from what I've read here on site.
Charles, slip over to the pub and read the thread on "eastern arc". Very exciting possibilities. 61.5 is definitely not going away.
That rumor of 61.5 going away has been floating around for years. I suspect it came to life out of an installer that pushed D* over E*. It has never been true, and certainly isn't true today.
If you think "installers should know better than some guy on a forum" you might want to inquire about how many installers know next to nothing about HD, or HDMI cables- or push component cable setups and know nothing of constraint tokens. Some simply don't even install HD at all. I suspect those guys will get onboard in the next year or two or leave the field.
There is NO government mandate to use one dish.
All your SD locals must be on one dish, but everything else can be anywhere.
The government has not gotten into the business of telling sat providers where to put programming YET! (Except for SD locals and public service).
61.5 is there to stay. Dish is putting MORE programming there and has acquired ~6 more transponders from Sky Angel on 61.5.
The practice of putting lesser-known locals on a separate wing dish is now a forbidden practice. Locals are not spread across two separate dishes anymore.
The SD locals were all that were available at the time. So the law only states that customers must be able to get locals with just one dish. Even though they can upgrade and get HDs on a different dish, the minimum requirement is still met by consolidating the SD locals. I imagine HD locals are a different game although the FCC may mandate that all of them be on one dish as well. It isn't mandatory that locals be on the same dish as core programming, only that all locals be available without requiring more than one dish just for getting all locals. Basically, you can't put ABC, CBS, Fox on one dish and then CW on a different dish.
Actually its more than just ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and CW. At one time, before this ruling, many markets had programming on multiple dishes. For example NYC had most of its SD locals including ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, UPN, WB and PBS(WNET) on the dish 500 (110/119), but had many others must carry locals on 61.5. They were forced to move them so that they could be seen using a single dish. Since then they added (or moved) all the HD (ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC) stations to 61.5.
Similar conditions occured in other markets.
When my installers show up, I tell them emphatically what I want and they do it. I have never had one argue with me yet. If they do, I would ask him to install it my way or leave. I have two Dish 500s. One on 110 and 119 and the other on 61.5.
