522 and USB keyboard

I have read that the 721 has been made to work with a standard USB keyboard connected to the USB port. Has anyone tried this with the 522?

I hooked an old Compaq USB keyboard to my 522; it doesn't seem to work. (Though I haven't tried it with the search function, perhaps the best use of a keyboard with the 721.) But is there some other trick needed to make the keyboard work, such as a reboot? Or perhaps the Compaq keyboard isn't standard enough to work with the 522?

To update my own thread: I went so far as to do a hard reboot (i.e., unplugging the 522 and plugging it back in), in hopes that it would recognize the keyboard; still no go. So apparently the only use for the USB port is whatever Charlie decides to let us use it for (like for a flash drive to load MP3's onto the HD, as in the concept shown at Team Summit).

I believe I saw somewhere that the port is just for techs... and it's encrypted. You'd need a special code to make it work.
I could be wrong, but I remember reading that somewhere....
