4K HDCP Errors (Hopper 3 and Joey 4K)

Yeah, was working on my network when I wrote this thread lol. Today when I first watched the Penn State - Illinois game, I got the same error message. I hit the channel down button and then reselected the channel and it seems to be working. I’ve tricked it a few ways before, but sometimes it doesn’t work. Strange. The Hopper 3 setup is Hopper 3 - Marantz AV8805 - Sony A9F OLED....

I experimented a bit today. I usually record these games in case it’s a good one that I might want to archive. So, I was getting the HDCP error on live TV. Then I went to the recording and brought it to about a minute of live and it played perfectly. I noticed something like this last Thursday and tried it again today. Seems like it may be a workaround until they fix it.

Well, tested several times and the following works:

- Select 4K 540-01 from the guide
- After a few seconds, error messages comes up
- Hit channel down on the remote and wait about 5 seconds. 4K returns with no error.....

If I select another non 4K channel and then go back to 540-01, I have to normally repeat the process. SJ

That does, indeed, work! I just did it 4 times.

I'm on the latest software versions and continue to get errors on both my systems (Hopper 3 and 4K Joey). All cables are certified, etc. Didn't have this issue until the previous version and hoped it would be fixed with the latest. Runs for about 30 seconds and then error... “HDCP TV Not Supported” 890.... Sorry, titled the thread incorrectly and can't figure out how to change. SJ
I had this problem until yesterday. I have newer TV's. 8K cables. Blah blah. That should not have been happening. I called Dish. They did all there checks and told me they were going to create a service call. I have 3, 4K joeys. And a Hopper 3. The 890 error is so you can't record HDCP protected content or $K one in the same. Or 4K on a say a 720 LCD. I would get this error on all 4 tv's with Dish equipment. On my bedroom TV I had a composite RCA to coax going to the garage and HDMI going to my bedroom tv from the 4K Joey. She had asked if I had any other ports used other than the HDMI ports on my equipment. I said no because I forgot. After a bit I remembered and disconnected it. Did a hard reset on all 4 boxes and it works now. If you have a low res feed to any TV from any of your equipment you will get this error. I was even getting the error on the 4K channels when there was no content? Not anymore. Hope this help someone. Have a Merry Christmas!

The issue was introduced two firmware versions ago. My Hopper 3 is just Hopper 3 - Marantz 8805 - Sony A9F. All quality 4K certified cables. There would be nothing a tech could do to fix this IMHO.... The issue is Dish.....

I tend to agree, the Marantz is a rebranded Denon or the other way around, but basically the same receiver as they are both the same company. I also have the A9G. I still get glitches on 4K on the Hopper and I have the fastest cables I could find coming in from Amazon in a couple of days. But other than it being the cable between the H3 and the Receiver I know it's can't be from the receiver to the TV, because just this afternoon I watched the first two episodes of The Expanse on Amazon Prime from my Fire TV Cube and it was perfect 4K HDR will full color depth gamut.

I've also read, which I will try if the new cable gives the same, that it seems the HDMI ports on the Denon's and the Marantz seem to be on a buss. On the Receiver forum someone was having the same problem and it was suggest to move the offending device closer to the Monitor 1 output.

As you know the Cable/Sat input is the farthest to the left while the output is furthest the the right. I have my FireTV hooked up to the Game or Media port (I forget which) and that is much closer to the right. So, if the new cable doesn't work, that's my next step, even if I have to rename and reassign all the inputs. If it fixes it, then it's the receiver. If not, then the finger is directly on Dish IMHO!!

Furthering this, I took my Denon out of the equation and went directly to the TV. Same issue...

For what it's worth, it looks like not everyone is playing the same game with HDMI 2.1.

No problem watching 4K on channel 540-01 using Sony XBR-65X900E connected to my Hopper3. As usual color is less vivid on 540-01 than Fox 28-00.

Same on my 540 I'm getting the error box too. Before that I had the same problem as dweber mentioned. A washed out picture as compared to the regular fox feed. Really disappointing

It’s been a while since I’ve used DISH to any degree, I’ve been perfectly content with my Apple TV and Apps, using DISH as simply my “content provider”, knowing I have the highest chances of 4K by streaming. A couple of times my broadband has slowed down on weekends and I’ve tried to flip over to this 540 4K “channel” on DISH for NASCAR races. Each time I received the HDCP error. I figured it was my setup- I have three TVs only one of which is 4K, and a Sony headset system which is basically an AVR without the amp, nor the ability to pass through 4K HDR or Dolby Vision but also able to handle up to at least DD 7.1 however that has to come from HDMI. To solve these problems I purchased HDfury’s 4K Vertex2 18Gbps which is an awesome piece of equipment that can solve just about any issue you could imagine. It can be complicated and tricky to get everything working right all at the same time but I’ve had no problem that I’ve not been able to fix until this. Eventually I took it out of the equation after two or three hours and it still did not work. Cables are all good (HS w/Ethernet) but just to be sure I tried two more, and there’s nothing else just Joey 4K -> Sony 75XBR950G. Still got the HDCP error. So then I started resetting everything to defaults (), no go, and turned on Bravia Sync and boom all the sudden it worked. The tech specialist in me had to know for sure of the cause and the solution, so of course I turned it back off, issue came back, but then when I turned Bravia Sync back on- it didn’t work! Finally I give in and go to the Googler and find this thread. But surely DISH has had to have fixed this by now, no??? Still, I figured I had nothing to lose and tried the “trick” of hitting ch down, and sure as $#!+, it worked without fail. What is going on with this crap? 6 months plus and this is still an issue? I think Spectrum has the right idea of having a nice app developed for the Apple TV and then selling them as a replacement cable box. If Dish had the infrastructure that’d be the way to go, maybe they should look into purchasing Starlink and then go that route. I can’t imagine DISH having the capacity to start up multiple 4K channels let alone enough for all the main cable channels. It’s data anyway, why not transmit it as such. DISH, if you ever see this, it’s time (actually, it’s been time) to step it up (like three or four notches). Redirect some of that cash flow from your pockets, back into this machine that is DISH Network before you find yourself in serious trouble.

I’m amazed this is still an issue. Tried some 4K Olympics last night and same issue. Watched on YouTube 4K with no issues…

I had this stupid issue in the 2020 football season and experienced it yet again today when trying to watch the Illinois/Nebraska game. Weird thing is that I tuned to the 4K channel. It was working for the entire pre-game, so I thought “finally, they fixed this.” I changed the channel during commercial, went back to 4K channel, then just like in 2020, I got the error message in about ten seconds. I have the proper cable and my tv is an LG OLED C series. Dish told me last year when I called that my tv is the problem. LOL. No, dude. It’s an OLED and I am using the high speed HDMI that they gave me. In fact, it’s obviously Dish’s problem because 4K content works from every other service. I never get any error message when watching Disney, 4K discs from Xbox, HBO, etc.

Just to add to the Channel down fix, this works on live TV only not recorded events.
Actually I just tried it on a recording and it did seem to work I think.

I can't tell if the post was saying when you press channel down that the channel is supposed to change and then you just go back to the correct channel and it will play without error message interrupting or if pressing channel down will bring what you were trying to watch back on the screen without actually changing the channel....

Anyway on the Nebraska vs Illinois FB game recording from yesterday I was just watching, I pressed channel down when the error message came up, and the channel changed after a few seconds. Then I pressed recall and I was able to watch the recording without the hdcp error popping back up every 10 seconds. Might have just been luck, but it did work and I was able to watch it.

Trying to watch the 4K college game (Nebraska Oklahoma). Can’t get the message to go away no matter how long I wait. I finally did the up channel, selected watch and then hit the down channel. Maybe it will hold there! Dumb that this still has not been fixed!

I'm having same problem although i changed to the 4K olympic channel and the game was on that in 4k , no issues. just 540-1 , I get the HDCP error I also have 4k LG OLED C-Series TV
