4K Events Discussion Thread

Compared the Paris Olympics picture on channel 105 with channel 540-04.

Channel 105 is 1080i and is brighter.

Channel 540-04 is 3840x2160 HDR
I realize that this was upscale from 1080P but the picture is definitely sharper but darker.
If you have Peacock, check out it’s video quality, it is 1080P, so more resolution then 1080i, but without the nasty up converting artifacts.

I watched a bit of the soccer on 540-04 this morning. I wasn't all that impressed with the video picture. It had little pop. Then they went to rugby at 8AM PDT and the video is outstanding.

The guide for 540-04 is not showing much in advance. I checked earlier today and just the rugby match was listed. Now the US soccer match is listed, but nothing later.
I added an NBC schedule in the non discussion thread. I just checked the 549-04 guide and it is now populated at least through tomorrow.

I finally had time to watch the Ohio State Marshall football game on 540-01. It was an excellent picture 3840x2160 4K HDR.
I compared the picture to the Fox 28 broadcast at 1080i and the 540-01 picture had much better resolution.

I realize that Bruce says that the actual video is only unconverted from 1080p but there is a definite improvement in the 4K picture versus the Dish 28-0 1080i picture on my Sony XBR-65X900E TV.

You also had HDR on your 540 look.

Since the World Series is on Fox network TV, the 540-01 channel isn’t available for me on my Hopper 3 as we don’t subscribe to the Locals. So I tried adding them to our Flex Pack and both the MyDish app as well as the Dish website came back with “Oops, there was a problem” messages, and no Locals added.

At this point, I guess I’ll just have to enjoy the OTA signal at an eighth of the resolution…

Well, the WS might well be over tonight so it will be a moot point! :)

Am I the only one that thinks it is strange that none of the College Football Playoff games are available in 4K. Is it because they are on ESPN?
Probably so. There have been a few 4K events on ESPN but it’s been a while. And, actually nobody is doing true 4K sports any longer. It is all 1080P with added HDR. Your 4K TV will upscale that 1080P to 4K. There are a few RSNs that do true 4K but Dish doesn’t carry any of them.
