I’m able to watch it on a non HDR Vizio. Same as the last Olympics.

Which model number? Perhaps it is HDR-compatible then.
HDR-compatible simply means it can accept HDR signal over HDMI. What it does with it is a separate question though.
Some TV sets were released as non-HDR but than got HDR support via a software update.

E65-E0 from 2016. A review on CNET for that year says it’s not HDR compatible.

Yes, my P75-C1, a 2016 model, got the update about a year ago. It is capable of HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG... The E's, I believe got exactly the same update.

Follow up.

The H3 recorded the open ceremonies from the 4k channel.
Reiterating, our H3 is connected to a 1080 tv.
The 4k program is in the dvr listings.
I press play.
The program starts.
With a superimposed shading and the incompatible tv message.
Why?

This is clearly a software forced block by Dish.
The program is clearly downscaled and is the fullscreen picture being mostly covered by the shaded window and incompatible hardware box.

I have the same issue.

I was also able to record a show, start it and see it in the background but with the error message and shadow box turned on. The video played fine, audio coming through no problem, just that alert is unable to be removed. When you click OK and the alert goes away, the content continues to play for a second or two without the error message or shadow and looks like what you'd expect. So it seems that non-HDR sets should be capable of viewing the channel but without the enhancements of HDR.

Looking around online in some other AV focused sites, other people have mentioned being able to play HDR content but not getting the HDR effect on their older non-HDR sets.

Definitely seems like a software block, especially if a tech was able to remove it for AKGolf temporarily. Really sucks that Dish just tossed all their early 4K users to the side. Not like we get a ton of events worthy of 4K that have an actual 4K feed, and now one of the few times they're restricting the feed to a small section of users.

I'll just add to the general confusion: Which HDR does this channel use? HLG? HDR10? HDR10+? DolbyVision? I'm guessing HDR10, but I thought I'd read that the 8K source was using HLG.

HLG is what they use for 8K masters.

Update: based on this post it might actually be HDR10+, not just HDR10. But it’s really irrelevant, as no one currently has a TV set capable of decoding the additional metadata offered by HDR10+. So, for all practical purposes it’s just HDR10.

Anyone else had issues with viewing non-4K after viewing 4K?

My issue is that I distribute the Dish through a splitter to other sets in the house (watching same channel as on the primary TV.) However, once I've tuned to the 4k Olympics programming, be it "live" or the playback of a recording, all the other non-4K TVs show "no signal". Even if I tune the Hopper to a non-4k program, the other sets continue to show "no signal". I have to tune the Hopper to a non-4K program, shut EVERYTHING down (the main TV and all remote TVs, AV receiver, and the Hopper), to get any signal to the remote TVs. I know the splitter isn't 4k compatible so that's likely the issue.

I'm sure it's a handshake issue or the aforementioned weak link being the splitter, but it's certainly annoying. I guess I only have to deal with it on occasion, but I wondered if anyone else experienced any additional issues after viewing 4k programming?

On a serious note, it's most likely your splitter causing the issue.

I replaced my HDMI splitter with a 4K@60 4x4 matrix because of those type issues. Mine was "lowest common denominator" and I the only way to watch 4K or 3D was to bypass it completely, as the lowest TV in my house is a Vizio that reports its EDID even when powered off.

Since getting the matrix, I've had a few issues but not had to swap a cable yet.

As far as the MOCA bandwidth goes, my 4K Joey reports over 600 mbps available so that should not be a limiting factor on sending the 4K HDR station to the enhanced 4K Joey if it ever gets made.

Are you sure? For HDMI, HDR requires 18GHz certified cables, not sure if 18GHz of data fits into 600mbps as I'm not that familiar with the technology nor the math. But it seems that even my gigabit Ethernet would not be able to handle that in real time.

It occurred to me that this would be really easy for someone with more than one Hopper 3 to test. Can you record the 4K HDR content on one Hopper 3, and play it back from the other Hopper 3? That would indicate whether MOCA can handle it. Also, there is this tip that LQQK found on another site and posted in the Olympics sticky thread:

This is totally bollocks up. Either Dish and/or NBC are a total bunch of clowns. I've already watched the events I want on Directv. So if they can do it Dish is at fault. I'm really PO'd at the hoops they are forcing us to go thru. Then it is a day delayed on top of it. I watched figure skating pairs of CA yesterday on DTV. Now to just watch that one skate had to go thru 2 or 3 screens to even get to the event and it lasted a couple of minutes then you have to go thru it again for every freaking event. I guess Dish I will just watch it on Directv.

I am pretty sure that the same 24-hour delay on the 4K HDR Olympic content applies to all providers: DirecTV, Dish, Xfinity.

This is a total failure by Dish! I have totally reduced my service from them by just keeping a small package that is heavy on regional sports and other sports services...no movie channels, no kiddie crap. You pay for a hopper 3 and 4k joeys with little content and when it does happen to be available they blow it...with the known issue lame excuse.
I get first run movies via Terrarium and have Netflix, Amazon Prime, tons of other APK's on my smart 4k tv's and 4k fire tv boxes. As for HDR it is as stupid as 3D...colors are over saturated and not realistically enhanced...I have 3 separate manufactured 4k HDR tv's...total waste with the HDR on each. By the by if Netflix and Prime can deliver 4k and HDR to both HDR and non-HDR 4k tv's via streaming and do so with bandwidth limitations...how does Dish screw this up?...were they not prepared...did they not test before advertised...no excuses for this!
