Is it be possible to have a 4DTV receiver (922) connected to just a 90CM
Ku dish & subscribed to the KU-Band Digipak? I don't want to go to a huge C-band dish, just to subscribe to AmericanLife TV?

Thanks for any information.

Where can you sign up for the KU Band Digipack?

I believe 4DTV needs C Band to work though, as thats where it gets its guides, mapping and software updates.

I don't see why you couldn't do this? As Scott said, if there is a problem, it will be with the maps and guide info. You can use a friends (who has C-band) connection for getting the correct maps, but the guide info would be lost when you unplugged it to take home. Unless a provider starts uplinking the guide info on ku-band, which ain't likely to happen unless a few tens of thousands of ku only subscribers suddenly appear. You also might would have to be on a C-band satellite to get the subscription authorized (I think)? One of the providers has a ku only package. I suggest calling them and asking these questions to them. If they can authorize it while you're on ku-band, please let us know? And, if they are now providing the guide info via ku-band, that's also something we would all love to know? Good Luck!

Thanks for all the info VoomVoom. I can get the 4DTV listing from Zap2ItLabs & use it with GBPVR to watch and record the programs off of AmericanLife. so if I don't get the guide from the satellite that would not be a problem. I will check into having to have C-band to have the subscription authorized, that would a problem.

I thought American life was in "fixed key" mode so if you have a previously subscribed 4DTV you can pick it up with no subscription? Or am I totally off base on that?

I do know SRL does provide most of the HITS feeds off of Gaxaly-4 Ku (X4), I also heard that they can give you the activation hits off the satellite, for the sevices.

Problems:
1. No guide, not a big deal for many with internet.

2. I think from what I read you can sub from that satellite and get turned on, though the 4dtv needs to get hit once a month and I am not sure if those monthly hits will come in off that satellite, if so you may need to be tuned to a certian transponder before you power the unit off.

3. If you get a used 4dtv, go for a 922 or 905, and only get it if it was already authorized, the 4dtv needs to be authorized, the 905 and 922 will keep the authorization even after a master reset, though the 920 will not, to my knowledge new receiver authorization can only be done off of Galaxy-10 and Galaxy-15 C-band, without the receiver being authorized for digital you will not be able to subscribe to or see any digital programming.

4. I never moved my 4dtv to another location, if you get a used 905 or 922 that already has the maps loaded, I am not sure if it will hold the maps in memory long enough for shipping to your location, I do not think there is and data for the maps or new receiver authorization on the X4, so if channel locations change you may be in for problems.

Best thing to do is call SRL aka programming center and ask them, and please let us know.

I seen a guy here on this forum post up a 4dtv dsr 905 up for sale, that may be a good unit to get for this X4 setup, if it can be done.

Tony, that's true, but if you don't have it mapped in correctly, you won't get it. It would depend on how long the 4dtv receiver has been since it was last mapped. American Life TV hasn't always been where it is now, although it has been here for some time now. I'm sure this channel should be in there, but maybe not?
So ThinMan, hook it up and see. Hook the 4dtv to your tv and put the 4dtv on X4 channel 603, if it has a 603? If it doesn't, you will need to get the maps. And, if it does and American Life TV is all you want, run your ku coax into the ku input on the 4dtv. You should be in business and if you want more, then you can subscribe, hopefully?

Thanks Again.

I thought so too, so I just tried it. I get it on my 922, it does get it even though it is not part of any of my subs. I hooked up the 905 which has no current subs, it does get the audio channels on X4 and one other TV channel, but no AmericanLife.

It will come on if you have a sub to any digital service.

Is the channel (603) in the maps? If not, head over to G1-3 and reboot the 905. Like tdti1 said, it should come in. Maybe you've had the 905 out of service since before American Life TV moved to it's current spot. It used to be elsewhere, I'm thinking T7 before it partially died. It's been around for years and moved many times. It started out as "The Nostalgia Channel" back in the 80's (I think), on F4 @ 83.0w. It was also called Goodlife TV for a while.

Yes, it's in the maps, this 905 had an active sub just a couple of months ago.

It Works!

Hi VoomVoom,

I installed a Fortec 90cm dish and found Galaxy 16 at 99.0°W with my FTA receiver. Once I had it dialed in good, I then hooked up the Ebay 922 and changed the setup to KU Band LNBF only. Switched it over to X4 603 and there was good old AmericanLife TV.

Later on I may get the Fortec 1.8M so I can subscribe to other channels and get the guide on the receiver and get C-Band programming.

Thanks for all the help!

That's good news ThinMan, if you look through the movie channels below 251, there seems to be at least something in the clear quite regularly. You might get lucky!
I agree with tdti 1, you would do yourself a favor to go with the larger 2.4m dish. Good Luck!

Al

Keep us updated if you subscribe to any channels and if it works, if so I have some buddy's that will setup some 4dtv's for Ku-band only, they can authorize it at my place, as long as the monthly hits go through it should work, it would suck if they had to come to my place once a month to get a rehit.

What kind of LNB do you need to on a Fortec dish that works good, and how to change polarities without slaving the 4dtv with FTA receiver?

Mine works ok, I just hate slaving it.
Not upgraded to a corotor II just yet either.
