37" Olevia LCD tv HDMI port fried last night

My 2006 Olevia 37" tv's HDMI port appears to have fried last night in the lightning storm we are still having. This one only has the single HDMI port, but has lots of other ports. At present I have my Dish dvr running on a component input, and my MicroHD fta receiver running on a composite input. I'm s.o.l. on everything else, as they are all HDMI outputs only.

Anybody got any feedback on a good 37" replacement tv? I can't go larger due to the cabinet that it sits in that my wife refuses to allow to be replaced.

Or, perhaps somebody knows of a good converter that can take HDMI input, and OUTPUT to Component? Most are the other way around. Yes, I know HDMI is digital, and Component is analog, that's why I said converter.

LG and Dynex have a 37" I know of. Id probably go with an LG in that price range. I like Insignia's (dad has 2 and they are actually OK sets), but I did not see a 37" Inisgnia.

Well, it looks like I may have to find a way to modify my tv cabinet a little. After spending the day researching some tv's, I really like the LG 42LA6200. This is a 42" passive 3D set: Cinema 3D 1080p 120Hz LED-LCD HDTV with Smart TV and Four Pairs of 3D Glasses. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BB9OOL0/?tag=satell01-20

It's so new though, there aren't any real reviews on the actual 42" model. Most places tend to consolidate their feedback with other size models, which makes for some frustration. Oh well, I'm not in such a hurry I have to decide immediately.

That should be a nice set. If you are looking into 3D, its really a good deal IMO.

Here's a unit that I purchased to convert the MicroHD's HDMI to component. There is also a version that will output SPDIF. This looks like the units that Monoprice used to sell.

You may want to check the size specs on say a 39" or 40" TV. On some new sets, the bezel is thinner than sets in 2006. You may be able fit a larger screen in the same space.

Dont24 is right, it appears that this tv even though larger, is thinner around the bezel and may still fit in my cabinet. I just can't pass this up, as technology has come a long way since 2006, and this INCLUDES passive 3D! At $699, that's the same price I got my old one in 2006 on Black Friday, but this new one has a lot more features, and I'm sure LG won't go bankrupt right away unlike Olevia who did.

dont24 raises an excellent point. Bezels are getting smaller, and therefore the screens can be larger.

We ended up buying a 42" set for the bedroom and moved the armoire into the closet. It opened up some space for us that was previously unusable which was really helpful for us.

You still got 6+ years out of the set, which was about $10/month. Not the end of the world IMO.

Hooked up the new LG 42la6200 tv set last night after work.

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!

OMG, I can't believe the difference in the picture between my 2006 Olevia, and this one. It's like sitting 10 feet away from a painting, and you are able to see the tiniest detail. I haven't even had time to do any real tweaks to it. I watched "The Crow" last night on BBC America, and it was like watching a brand-new movie all over again. Simply incredible. The best thing that Olevia ever did for me, is fry it's HDMI port... This 42" tv set also is thinner than my old 37" inch tv, so fits nicely in the same cabinet without my having to alter it again.

I can recommend this tv if people are on the fence in buying a new one. I got it from BuyDig for $699, and if you put the model number ( 42la6200 in this case ) in the promo code box, they knock off $100. I think that holds for all LG tv's at present.

I've now also hooked the tv up using an optical cable to my Vizio VSB2000 soundbar, and the sound is much better. I've also hooked up the external harddrives I was using on my WDTVLIVE (original version), (the tv has 3 usb ports) and it's able to so far play everything the WDTVLIVE unit can. The interface for this isn't quite as nice as the LIVE unit, but very usable. I also ran Playon server on my HTPC, and this tv set picks it up as a DLNA choice, and is able to play everything Playon is able to transcode. So, I'm not limited to only the smart tv apps that are available right now.

It also can pick up the Windows 7 pc's hooked to the same router via DLNA, and also see any music files or videos, etc on these pc's
