Maybe I missed this in the team summit notes but was there anything said about customers getting charged a monthly fee if they were to utilize this feature when it becomes available?

Not to worry! At the rate they are going these receivers will be obsolete by the time they actually get USB storage functioning.:D

Heck they haven't even gotten the OTA problems fixed yet and it has been a couple of months now.

Add another month for the 211s. I'm pretty sure they will have a DVR fee, USB fee or whatever they want to call it.

That would really suck if the customer has to buy the external drive and then pay a monthly fee, but honestly I wonder if they will bring it out much like they had said so many times that the ports on all of the four digit receivers were for future expansion that never happend.

My guess is that you will get hit by a monthly dvr fee at $5.98 and a external hard drive fee too . I don't know what it will be yet , but this is DISH we are talking about. They love to nickel and dime you to death with all these fees :

5.98 dvr fee- PER RECEIVER
6.00 hd enabeling fee -if no hd pack- PER HD RECEIVER
6.00 no basic pack fee
5.00 SD additional receiver fee- added PER EXTRA SD RECEIVER - after the 1st
6.00 HD additional receiver fee- added PER EXTRA HD RECEIVER - after the 1st
5.00 no phone line connected fee on dual receivers

I had been wanting to go with a 622 but then heard about the 722 then heard about the 211 getting usb storage and changed to a 211 + 311 but jeesh with all of those fee's it makes me wonder if its really worth it.

I believe they said during our tour of the booth they were looking into a DVR enabling fee (one time) then monthly DVR fee, waived of course for AEP.

Figures, one more fee and another reason to not go with them, I wouldnt be surprised if the external storage device ends up being a dish specific item like that failed atempt at a tv and receiver combo.

I dont know anybody that has DTV, but dont they have external hard drives? If so, do they charge an extra monthly fee? Business-wise it might not be a good idea to charge more as it would give them (and all other providers) another "see why we are better than E*" thing to push.

That would be nice but D just doesnt have the SD or HD programming that I want, some of the Voom channels are now more of an option than they were a year or two ago for my wife and daughter and with the possibility that D's incredibly vague commercials about adding up to 150 hd channels possibly being RSN's then I definitely wont go with them.

That is what I thought. It is a big difference in offering external storage for the HR20 at zero cost than the 211 for a dvr fee. The consumer is already paying the DVR fee with the HR20.

Dish probably want more money ie follow own doctrine "charge for ANY feature", but same time don't want to get ppl stressed by it.
Typical "Buridan's ass" syndrome :).
