The Patriots won three Super Bowls in the first four years with Tom Brady as their QB. Since then, eight seasons have passed and they still haven't won a fourth Lombardi. All postseason losses are hard to accept, but some more so than others. This is my list of worst postseason losses (#1 being the worst, IMO) in the Brady/Belichick era:
1. 2006 AFCCG @ Colts- this was one of my favorite Pats teams. The receiving corps was relatively weak (remember Reche "Bug Eyes" Caldwell and Doug Gabriel?), and the defense was aging but still very gritty. The week before, the Pats went into San Diego and beat the #1 seed Chargers, and then had a 21-3 halftime lead in Indy before the Colts came storming back to win, 38-34. The Bears were there for the taking in the Super Bowl and payback for SB 20 would have been their's. I still break out in cold sweats thinking about this game!!
2. 2011 Super Bowl vs. Giants- I put this ahead of the other Giants Super Bowl because the Pats had this game won and couldn't close it out.
3. 2010 divisional playoff vs. Jets- IMO, the best Pats team since the undefeated team. They were steamrolling every team in their path (most notably blowout win in Chicago in a blizzard, Green Bay on a Sunday night, and the 45-3 thumping of the Jets)
4. 2007 Super Bowl vs. Giants- one would think this is #1 because of the going for history angle, right? Yes it stung, but the Giants outplayed the Pats in this game and deserved to win (David "Velcro" Tyree notwithstanding). It reminded me of the Pats win over the Rams.
5. 2012 AFCCG vs. Ravens- This one hurt in a different way. There was no crushing last minute defeat, but I really thought the Pats had a chance to go all the way.
6. 2005 divisional playoff @ Broncos- lots of turnovers and questionable calls in this game, and losing to Jake Freakin' Plummer always hurts. But missing out on the first threepeat in the SB era is what really hurt.
7. 2009 wildcard round vs. Ravens- Pats were going nowhere this particular season anyway, so this one stung the least.
8. Missing the playoffs in 2008 despite losing Tom Brady in Week 1 and still going 11-5
