Reds Sign Jacque Jones, Daryle Ward

According to Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News, the Reds signed Jacque Jones and Daryle Ward to minor league deals today.
Jones, 34 in April, hit .147/.239/.207 in 134 plate appearances for the Tigers and Marlins last year. Jones played winter ball and had laser eye surgery this winter.
Ward, 33, hit .216/.319/.402 in 119 plate appearances for the Cubs last year. He missed time with a herniated disc.


I think Jones is a good low risk/high reward pickup for the Reds.

As I've told both Paul and Jimbo, I thought Jones would have a bg year for the Tigers last year. Maybe eyesight was an issue with him last season.

I just heard on the radio that Mark Kotsay had back surgery last month, and will be out until May (where did this come from???? )

The Red Sox picked up Brad Wilkerson for insurance.

I'm sure you will recall we had a conversation shortly after you guys got Mark where I praised the hell out of him as a "balls to the wall" player. However, I did say "Beware of that cranky back."

Hopefully, this will be a small setback for a really great player and a great guy.

3:39pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman talked to Sheets' agent Casey Close, who said his client will have elbow surgery. Sheets hopes for a July or August return. Tom Haudricourt says Sheets expects the Brewers to pay for the procedure.

GM Jon Daniels says he's not optimistic at this point.
The injury first surfaced late in the '08 season, but until Sheets' physical with the Rangers it was thought that rehab would be sufficient. As many readers have pointed out, if Sheets has surgery and signs after the June draft he'll no longer cost a draft pick to sign.


Geez, when it comes to pitching, if the Rangers didn't have bad luck they'd have no luck at all!

I hope they get something out of these players. They need a left fielder and Jones would be good for that.

No he isn't signed. He didn't pass the physical.

Thanks for the clarification. I heard yesterday that he took the physical after he had signed on ESPN, and I thought that was a little out of order. Usually with FA signings, the physical comes before the signing. If he comes back healthy later this season, I'm sure there will be plenty of offers available from pitching starved clubs.

AND to give the player all the credit is the same. The players give litterally complete control in the process. The ONLY time they get involved is when there is mutliple offers at around the same amount of money or they get desperate and they tell them to just accept the deal. Manny is nowhere near desperate. He will more than likely STILL get at least 25 million.

Here are some thoughts on Manny Ramirez from around baseball:

• Scott Miller of CBS Sports thinks "the Giants immediately become NL West favorites if they sign Manny. Adding Bob Howry, Jeremy Affeldt, Edgar Renteria and Randy Johnson certainly helped their team.
• The Boston Herald's John Tomase remembers the last time someone other than Manny started the season as the Boston left fielder: Troy O'Leary in 2001. Tomase thinks Jason Bay will continue to play well as Manny's successor in left.

• Mark Kreigel of Fox Sports writes that clubs "are scared of Manny being Manny."

Angels Interested In Abreu, Dunn

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, major league sources say the Angels have spoken to Bobby Abreu's agent and have expressed interest in Adam Dunn. When Rosenthal asked Angels GM Tony Reagins about the club's interest in the two players, Reagins said "If something makes sense for us, we'd look at it."
After losing Mark Teixeira to the Yankees, the Angels could use high OBP players like Dunn and Abreu, especially on one year deals. Vladimir Guerrero, Juan Rivera and Torii Hunter are the current Angels outfielders, and Gary Matthews Jr. is slotted in as DH.
Reagins has said the Angels will not be in on Manny Ramirez.
