I replaced the dishwasher in my house this past weekend and found out that it was made back in 1972. Wow. I had to use a dolly to get it out of my house because it was so heavy. The new one I installed which was the same size I carried into the house on my left shoulder. I bet the new one will not see 33 years of service. Thought I would share this just for the heck of it.

ok.

I forgot for a second there are other things called dishes that people eat off of and not just the ones we put on our roof. Wasn't expecting this thread :)

same here :)

We just got done moving my grandma into her new house and the fridge that was in the garage that we moved must have been 45 years old....it had a diagram on the back on how to wire the power plug to the unit :shocked

the power plug looked original with no grounding

LOL: i first saw your post and thought this has to be interesting!:D

other than the fact the Dish guy was there at 11:50 that was it.
I'm going by tonight and snapping some pictures and posting it in my "Dish Mover charges" thread :)

You know that remindes me about a month ago I saw a guy up on his roof with a bottle of windex and paper towels cleaning his lnbs. Maybe a bird left a deposit.

I was just talking about this today at lunch: my great grandparents just moved from a small house with a shed in the backyard, into a double-wide "manufactured" home on my great-aunt & -uncle's property. Anyways, before the move they had an old International Harvester upright refrigerator & freezer from the 40s in their shed (plugged in and running), and it was in excellent working condition. That thing always fascinated me, being a miracle of American engineering and craftsmanship. However, sadly, when they moved they just had it hauled off to a dump. Now, had they asked me if I wanted it... :(

of course the new one won't last 30 years. most companies want you to buy over and over and over.

My water heater just died. It was about 14 years old. Yesterday I was talking to the plumber and remarked how convenient it was for the manufacturers that they only go about 10-15 years before they rust out and die. He told me that in the older section of town there were people running water heaters that were 60+ years old! They were made out of brass back then so therefore could last a LONG time. Now they are made in Mexico out of glass lined steel. The glass eventually cracks and the steel quickly rusts . This is how my 14 year old water heater died and I have no doubt that's how the new one will go too.

My dad's a dump rat... one of those guys who brings more stuff home from the dump then when he left. When I was about 13 or so he brought home a (then) 30 year old Briggs and Stratton Snowblower which must have seen it's share of snowstorms up in New England. All it needed to run was a shear bolt on the blades. I asked him this last winter how it was doing and it's still going. Must be at least 40 years old by now.

My uncle bought a new John Deere snowblower that year and it broke down that same season.

You also have to consider the operating expenses for appliances. Sure that 40 year old dish washer (no I don't mean your wife), refrigerator, or water heater might be running fine, but how much do you spend on electricity/gas to operate it? Old refrigerators are power hogs. The compressors aren't efficient. The insulation isn't enough. Yes you might not get 40 years out of your next fridge, but the costs savings by getting a more efficient fridge probably would pay for it over it's life.

If the appliance breaks after 30 or so years you are right about new appliances being more efficiant however let me tell you a short story. A man called me one day trying to sell me new windows for my house that would save me about 10% on my electric bill. The cost of replacing the ones I already have would have wound up being after all said and done about 18000 dollars. Now, my bill probably averages about 130 dollars a month. 10% would be 13 dollars a month. 13 divided into 18000= well you get the picture. I'll just have to eat the 13 dollars. If it ain't broke don't try to fix it.

It all depends on the circumstances. If your current windows were still in good condition, sealed well, and had double panes of glass, then 10% might not make it cost effective as your utility bill could be low already. But if your windows were leaky, didn't seal well, had a single pane of glass, etc, that could contribute to a much higher utility bill. Saving a percentage of the utility bill cost is a poor way to judge how cost effective something is because it relies on too many different factors and is very specific to the particular circumstances.

A 25+ year old refrigerator probably consumes 1400+ kwh of electricity a year...the older or poorer maintained the unit is, the more it consumes. Lets assume a .09/kwh rate. That's $126 per year. A new fridge will consume close to a third of that at 450 (more or less depending on features, configuration, and size obviously). At that same .09/kwh, your looking at $40 a year, saving over $80/year. $80/year might not pay for a high end model, but it will more then pay for a base model.
