That will allow missing HD channels to subs in PR and will not make any difference to subs in the states getting 110/119/129 configuration.

very good question to ask i just wondering the same thing what is going on who knows.maybe scott would know what is going on i just brought out the idea that is could be the rsn plus other channels there are 96 there so who knows.

Perhaps the tests are only happening on 110/119 because they have converted the Western Arc to 8PSK and are seeing how much potential bandwidth gain there really was (I read a 30% expected gain). Looks to be about 16 channels per transponder. Maybe just running tests, or have some new more efficient encoders.

that is what iam wondering about maybe this is conversion for western arc to 8psk.anyone got testing receiver could find out what this is it would be greatly appreciated.

It has to be new encoders. Although even if they're amazing, I can't imagine 16 channels per TP looks good.

Yeah, I can't imagine 16 HD channels per transponder considering we have 8-10 HD channels per transponder now. When I see 16 channels per transponder, what comes to my mind is that there are only 8 unique HD channels per transponder and the second one will be a mapdown in the future. ESPN's HD channel is 9424, but it maps down to 140, and if you look at "The List", they are listed as two separate channels on the same transponder. So my guess is that there is only going to be 8 HD channels per transponder.

I'm remembering the days when we were saying how more than 8 STANDARD definition channels per transponder was impossible. When they started testing 24 SD channels per transponder I remember writing something about it in the old channel list.

13 new encrypted "test" channels were added to 148 transponder 20 on channels 6700-6712. (ANON) Looks like Dish is testing a compression scheme to shove 13 video channels per transponder. The current maximum is 12 unique video channels per transponder.

• The "not-so-HD" channel compression continues today! Channels 9425 ESPN2 HD, 9429 NGC HD, 9462 FOOD HD moved from transponder 22 to 2 at 61.5 moved from tp 2 for a total of 6 HD channels on one transponder. They Join Starz HD, HGTV HD and NFL HD on the same transponder. Yup, they are all on one Transponder! The only way to fit them all in is to compress (i.e. remove information) the signal.
  • Update: According to subscribers to these channels, the picture has actually improved. Dish is now apparently using a new MPEG-4 Encoding process that allows for more compression with less loss or at least less noticeable artifacting. See www.satelliteguys.us for the thread on the subject.

35 MPEG 4 Test channels went up on transponder 2 at 148 on channels 6915-6949. 25 SD video and 10 audio channels on ONE transponder!

MPEG4 Test Channels 6940-6946 at 148 switched from audio test channels to video test channels. And channels 6947-6949 were removed from the system. (ANON) This makes 32 video test channels on at the same time on one transponder. It is unknown if these are unique channels, but that is the guess.

• 4 more HD MP4xx test channels 5930-5933 were added to tp 8 at 148. At the same time the 10 other MP4 channels on that transponder were changed to SD. That is 10 SD and 4 HD channels on one transponder using MPEG4.

Perhaps as encoder technology improves, Dish might be able to squeeze another feed on each transponder and be able to use the bandwidth of each transponder more efficiently, while still maintaining the same quality or even being able to improve on quality.

Phoenix TV Hong Kong (Chinese) according to the other guys. If I am reading the reports correctly on both sites, it appears to be in SD.
