I have a dead T-Mobile HP IPAQ loaded with mp3 music feeding a small stereo amp for my patio speakers. Works great!
Mounted mine as an external drive and sent some mp3's to for the trip to and from work, tested, will be better than my ipod (easier to navigate)...

Worked perfectly, much easier to navigate on the way to work... some at work saw it on my desk and want to do the same with their phones...
Over at XDA, in the HTC Eris forum, someone is working on building "non-phone" ROM, i.e. all the phone functionality is removed or disabled.
