FCC approves sale of Flint-area NBC, CW affiliates to Sinclair Broadcast Group

FLINT, MI – The Baltimore, Md.-based Sinclair Broadcast Group closed on its acquisition of 18 television stations owned by Barrington Broadcasting Group, LLC, including Flint-area stations NBC Channel 25 and CW Channel 46, and WBSF in the Flint-Saginaw-Bay City-Midland markets.

The transaction, which was approved by the FCC, is worth $370 million and includes a total of 24 stations in 15 markets across Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina, New York, Texas, Iowa, Missouri, Georgia, Colorado and Illinois.

"(In late February), we launched our small market television group when we announced we would be acquiring certain COX Media television stations," said David Smith, president and CEO of Sinclair. "The Barrington stations are an important part of that strategy, providing meaningful scale to the group. … [W]e believe the Barrington stations can generate approximately $71.0 million of cash flow, on average."

Due to FCC ownership conflict rules, Sinclair also sold its station in Syracuse, NY, WSYT (FOX), and assigned its local marketing agreement and purchase option on WNYS (MNT) in Syracuse, NY. The company will also sell its station in Peoria, IL, WYZZ (FOX).

Calls to Sinclair were not immediately returned.

YAY! Two more local tv stations will be even MORE crap then they are now. Not sure how that's even possible, but looks like it will be. I'm stuck in the outer northern edges of the worst DMA Michigan has ever had, and probably ever will have. I've emailed, snail-mailed, and phone called to ask to get some of the better sub channels here, but they always just basically tell me to bugger-off. I'd love to get AntennaTv, but I doubt it could ever happen. Thank God for FTA satellite, I just wish there was an open feed for AntennaTv somewhere.

I'm also in the Flint DMA. On the positive side maybe this means that our local NBC will finally get 5.1 sound. I emailed the station a couple years ago asking why they were only giving us DD 2.0 on national programming instead of passing through the DD 5.1 sound. He told me that they used to but their DD encoder was damaged in a storm. He told me they weren't going to replace it because most AVRs have Dolby Pro Logic and that was the same thing as a native 5.1 feed. Ridiculous.

The FCC really needs to close these loopholes on the station ownership rules. To me, if Sinclair already owned the Fox affiliate, they shouldn't be allowed to own the other two, even if it's through a shell company or through a local marketing agreement. To me these shell companies and agreements should be banned. Either you fully own the station outright or you don't. It's because of these loopholes that Sinclair now has (by my count) 146 TV stations across the country.
