When they raise the speed around here they don't say anything to their customers and wait for them to figure it out and call in to request an increase to the new minimum speed. I've had to do that three times now. We recently went from 60 to 100mbs minimum but I'm now paying $65. I got an offer for 400mbs for another $25 but passed on that.

Central Virginia Electric Coop notified me a few months back that they will be running fiber to my home early in 2020! Home | Firefly Broadband What they are going to offer is unlimited 100mb for $49.95 and 1GB for $79.95. I've been on bandwidth limited cellular hot spots now for a number of years and currently pay $43 for Sprint 4G Wireless and I'm looking forward to that 100mb connection. Only bad part about it is, I'm 74 years old now and with failing health I don't know how long I'll be around to enjoy it! I'll probably get sub with Easy News again and catch up on what I've been missing on USENET for the past 9 years! :imshocked

These days 74 isn't that old. :D

Is Usenet still around?

74 is old when you got the following:

Meniere's Disease

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Sjogrens Syndrome

Poly Arthritis

And was diagnosed with Vitreomacular Traction Syndrome in April!

And yes, USENET is still around! Don't know what's on it now but I got a feeling I'm going to find out!

Where is it now? The groups I used to follow became Yahoo groups. One unmoderated (these days) group seems to be only invitations to porn sites.

How could they be bitter with all that free porn?
Not free anymore either.

Where are these un-free groups?

I didn't think Usenet was use for anything in the past 15 year except for spam and illegal activities.

I would love for my internet speed to double, but then I'd have to invest in a 10 Gb router, switches and NICs. I'm purposely holding off on getting a new laptop until HP has the option to customize a Zbook 17 with a 10Gb NIC. Charter has plans to start lab testing 10 Gb by the end of the year or early 2020, with the hopes to bring it to market by 2022 or 2023.

Know how you feel Lone Gunman. Everything aches on me nowadays.

But anyhow, Go Netspeed ran fiber in my neighborhood. 50$ a month flat fee. No modem rentals, taxes or data caps. 150 up and down. My 2 year deal runs out with Comcast this spring. Was thinking about going with them and back to Dish. Miss my Hopper. But the provider disputes Dish has make me leery.

UPDATE: Well, here we are over a year later and my new 100mbs fiber connection still isn't installed?? They have moved my area out to winter of 2020, which could mean that I might not see it until some time around March 2021? Oh well! They have been running the cable around in some areas close to me, but just not to my house yet. I'm a half mile off the paved road with underground electric service so that cable will have to be underground also.

So I'm still waiting...................................:( :deadhorse2

So the brother-in-law is the first one to sign for co-op fiber expansion and the big buck option.

They come down his dirt road burying cable and stop about 100 yards from his entrance.

Then he sees them connecting houses.

Calls and is told , main line fiber stopped until after the spring thaw.

So don't feel alone.

I still remember the excitement when I upgraded from a 300 to 600 baud modem.

I still remember the excitement when I upgraded from a 300 to 600 baud modem.
And the excitement when I upgraded to a 1200 baud modem, and then the utter astonishment at jumping up all the way to a 9600 baud modem. What a difference!

When I joined the federal civil service, I found myself in possession of a modem pool of v.32 modems which went nowhere but just one multiuser computer. So I fixed that right away and offered my whole division FREE internet service. :D Until I was ordered to unplug them. :crying

Well they did it again. Since 2019 it has gone from 25 to 50 to 100 to 200 and now to 300Mbps and unlimited data. In those 4 years the price has gone up $10. Oh yeah, they dropped the modem fee ($7) and now provide a free modem so the price increase was just about offset by the dropping of the modem fee making it a near wash. Ask me if I miss Verizon DSL, go ahead, ask me. Uhhhhh, NO! ;)

They did that with the fiber around here. It used to be $99 for 100M, now that they have double things a few times you get 1 Gig plus for that. I say for plus, cause they just let it run as fast as it will go. But it don't at this time go much faster than that, and to see those speeds you of course have to have 2.5G or 10G, etc- equipment in your house or business.
