Apple Event - May 7, 2024 (New iPads!)

My 10-year old iPad Air is still working well, but it is definitely showing its age: slow for modern apps and limited on memory. It might be time to upgrade! Let’s see what Apple has to offer.

The new iPad Pro looks really interesting!

Too bad the Air has the M2, I would of bought one with the M3, then given my ipad pro with the M2 to my daughter.

Also would not mind the little lighter weight.

What did you order?

For myself, I know I do not need the new Pro, but I will still purchase it for that .1” and the M4.

I am getting 11” Pro with M4, 1TB WiFi.
I don’t really need 1TB today, but I know I would regret going with anything less a few years from now. Hopefully it lasts 10 years, like my previous one.

I have 2TB with my current pro, definitely do not need that much since I no longer travel, did not need it even then.

Notice that there are two versions of the M4 chip:

Models with 256GB or 512GB storage:
  • 9-core CPU with 3 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores
  • 10-core GPU
  • Hardware-accelerated ray tracing
  • 16-core Neural Engine
  • 120GB/s memory bandwidth
  • 8GB RAM

Models with 1TB or 2TB storage:
  • 10-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores
  • 10-core GPU
  • Hardware-accelerated ray tracing
  • 16-core Neural Engine
  • 120GB/s memory bandwidth
  • 16GB RAM

I looked at the 13” iPad Air as a possible improvement for my Mother-in-Law with eyesight issues. The larger screen real estate would allow for larger icons and clearer text. The downside would be the increased weight, fingerprint reader/screen button, and smaller bezels.

Plus, she would need all new charging cables and plugs. Too bad this won’t be available in time for Mothers Day.

While I don't need more power than my latest mini provides (for what I use it for), I would have welcomed the m series chip in it as an update. That and face id

Maybe in a few years.

Well that makes some of the decisions easier, would have to be a 1TB at least.

Amazon does not have it up for sale yet, get better CC points when I purchase from there.

Also, any difference in the 13” Air with the M2, for example does the 1TB have a slightly better processor like the new pro?

It doesn’t look like. Just one M2 chip option listed:
  • 8-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores
  • 10-core GPU
  • 16-core Neural Engine
  • 100GB/s memory bandwidth
  • 8GB RAM

How do these compare with what’s in current iPhones?
M2 and M4 have more cores (both CPU and GPU) than the A17 in the iPhone 15. So if an app can take advantage of that, it should run much faster on the iPad.

A17 pro (iPhone 15 Pro Max)
  • 6-core CPU with 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores
  • 6-core GPU
  • 16-core Neural Engine
