I got a Samsung PCL5415 a couple of years ago and just recently found some posts recommending to remove the "glare screen" on rear projection TVs. I finally worked up the courage to pop the front cover.
What I found was interesting: a three-part screen sealed on all four sides with masking tape. I pulled the whole thing out, carefully cut the tape and removed the front clear plastic part, leaving the white screen on the back and the "grid" in front of it.
While I was in there I noticed the mirror was fogged and the three tubes were covered in dust. After cleaning the mirror and tubes, and putting everything back together minus the clear plastic part, the results are incredible! I can watch TV in the daytime with the curtains opened! I dare say the picture quality on my set is now comparable with the LCD and plasma displays at Best Buy. This procedure was, needless to say, much cheaper than dropping the money for a new TV.
I would still love to have it professionally calibrated but this will do for now.
