New York, NY – October 18, 2006 – VOOM HD Networks’ WorldSport HD, the channel dedicated to 24/7 high-definition global sports coverage, announced today that it will continue to air exclusive U.S. HD carriage of the Spanish Premier League (SPL), widely acknowledged as the world’s top soccer league. The channel has just reached an agreement to produce coverage of matches from the current 2006-2007 season through the 2008-2009 season, with 38 games per season. WorldSport HD is a pioneer in HD coverage of live sports and is part of the VOOM HD Networks, the largest and most diverse suite of high-definition channels nationwide and currently available nationally on DISH Network.
The Spanish Premiere League, known familiarly as La Liga, includes such powerhouse teams as Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Valencia and Atletico Madrid and features many of the superstars in the sport. Among the list of top players are Barcelona’s Ronaldinho, named World Player of the Year two years in a row by the international governing body, FIFA, and Real Madrid’s David Beckham and Fabio Cannavaro, the latter of whom played on his native Italy’s 2006 World Cup Championship team.
In addition to game coverage, prior to each match, viewers can catch La Liga Report, produced by WorldSport HD. The half-hour series is a weekly in-depth look at the league and at news surrounding the sport’s most popular stars. Hosted by WorldSport HD’s soccer analysts Paul Giblin and Sid Lowe, the show includes interviews, news, highlights and a preview of the day’s match. Both hosts also provide play-by-play commentary for the SPL matches. Specific schedule details, including updates regarding player line-ups and start times, as well as La Liga Report highlights, will be available online through www.worldsporthd.com
WorldSport HD has been covering the Spanish Premiere League since 2003, live and in high-definition. In May of 2006, WorldSport HD announced the rights to be the exclusive, high-definition, U.S. television broadcaster, for 25 live games from the Canadian Football League during the 2006 season. The coverage included a weekly Friday night game, selected division playoffs, the Scotiabank East and West division Championships and the Grey Cup.
“We are passionate about bringing this elite league to American audiences with all the excitement that live HD coverage brings, and have been gratified that the SPL games have attracted a loyal and steadily growing audience for WorldSport HD,” said Mark DeAngelis, VP of Programming for the channel. “In high-definition viewers can see every aspect and angle of the sport clearly. The SPL coverage is an excellent addition to VOOM’s already increasing library of visually stunning HD programming.”
