Working on the server

  • Server Issues.

We are very aware that there have been system issues the past few days. In troubleshooting the system, it has been determined that the issue is at our provider and is hardware related. The provider was going to move us to a new server, however we are now told by the provider the issue is at the data center in St. Louis. They have offered to move us to a different datacenter on the East Coast or West Coast, however at this time we have declined the move to a different data center as it would affect the speed of connecting to about half our members.

We are waiting for more information from our provider, however we are trying to ride this out to stay in the same data center, so that when the server is fixed all users in the US will get the fastest connection possible.

If after some time the issue is not resolved we will be forced to move to another data center, if this happens there will be down time, as they will need to transfer everything to the new server and we will need to update the DNS and other settings for the new IP address of the new server. If we have to do this, the time it will take to move will be out of our hands.

We are going to try our best to weather through this, so we thank you in advance if you encounter any issues.

    Sorry for the issue!

I have had a few of them over the years. Had to get surgery for one as it was too big to go on its own.

Most of the time I can get rid of them without going to the hospital, or without taking anymore pain medicine then some ibuprofen. Doctors don't know how I can go through the pain, but I guess I built up a tolerance. I won't take any other pain meds or go to the hospital unless the pain is really really bad.
Surgery, what about lithotripsy?

Why would they name a web server N-GINX...?

Well.... maybe they did not move it yet.

Got this from them a few minutes ago...

Dear Scott,

Please be kindly informed that we are currently experiencing some issues within our data centers located in St. Louis where your server is located. Unfortunately, we do not have any ETR at this moment. We are currently working closely with us to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

As an alternative, we can offer you to move your server to a different location free of charge. In such case the IP of your VPS will be changed the process as each IP is bound to its location. Different location fees may apply.

If you agree to move your server to a different location, we will need and an explicit confirmation that we can move your server and that you are aware of IP change during the migration (your data will remain intact).

If you have any further questions or need help, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best regards,

Kevin

The language in that reply sounds kind of scammy. The word kindly is referred to a lot in scam emails. Certainly doesn't sound like a person from St. Louis which is near me. 🤣

The site is still slow today at times though.

Google wasn’t very helpful looking on what would cause the "CPU STUCK" message. It showed how to physically remove a CPU stuck to a heatsink or in a ZIF socket. Since the site is hosted on a Virtual Machine, those particular problems should not apply (unless the Virtualization is ultra-exact!)

Yes I am seeing CPU Freeze issues today. (Damn.) But no total lockups like yesterday.

The support is from Germany so English is not their first language.

We have the option of moving to a server on the East Coast which would be great for people on the East Coast, in my testing the latency is 8 MS.
We have the option of moving to the West Coast but for me the latency there is 69 MS.
And where we are now in St. Louis is 30 MS which I am guessing would be best for people anywhere in the US.

While I could move, it would be a lot of work, as a lot of DNS to change and updates to email records for SPF etc... and there is always the worry that our IP we move to was used before and is blocked in email blacklists. Its a gamble to move. And I imagine there would be a few hours down time in doing the move.

For now I am going to stay here until they fix the problem, but is it going to take them hours or days? That I don't know. And if it gets bad again like yesterday then I will have no choice. And that move will make the site faster for some users and slower for others depending on where they are in the USA. That's a factor for me as well.

So for now we will limp along doing our best. I will NOT be doing any work to the server since it is confirmed by them to be hardware issue, not a software issue.

But if it gets bad then I will do what I have to do.

This is frustrating for me as I am sure it is for you guys as well. I do apologize.

This is what the errors look like when they happen. The ISP says it’s a hardware issue.

The CPU is a AMD Epyc 7282 16 core processor. Operating at 2.8 GHz.

Your hosting company is providing a physical server, not a VM? They don’t maintain spare servers for this contingency?

They are having issues, again they were trying to move us yesterday. And then from the email I posted above say they are having issues at that location. Not sure what that means.

Please be kindly informed that we are currently experiencing some issues within our data centers located in St. Louis where your server is located.

I wish they would give more information and I have requested more information but have not got anything back yet.

Got a note back from them... that "We are working on things now. We will contact you when the work is complete."

Don't know what that means.

Its too bad I don't drink. I need one.
