Over the past 1.5 years, I have come to deeply understand the basics of what one can receive with an FTA receiver, a 30-40 dish and a motor. Lyngsat is preferred to SatcoDX for current and accurate information on channel and satellite availability.

Looking at many posts over the recent past, I have noticed more and more members of this forum talking about setting up a micro-BUD system with 40" (1m) to 48" (?) (1.2m) dishes and appropriate LNBs. Since Lyngsat identifies the channels that are available to both KuBand and C-Band, and reflects any encryption on such channels, I was wondering what channels could be received with a microBUD system and my Fortec Lifetime Receiver.

Inquiring mind would like to know.

I was thinking that it wouldn't be a bad idea to have people list channels they can receive and signal they get satellite by satellite. Comparing signal stregths won't help too much if the same receiver is not used as they all like to report different signal strengths/quality.

Helpful information when posting channels

Maybe when posting channels that can be received with microBUDs, members of this forum could post with the following information:

(1) Satellite by name and longitude;
(2) Channel Names; and
(3) Video Encryption Method - None (Clear, DVB, Digicipher 2, PowerVU, etc.)
If member receives encrypted channels, then advise if special equipment or
subscription is required.

Looks like no one has done a really in-depth listing yet. This could be becuase our official Originator, Father of the MicroBUD, Lord Cascade :D has a limited view of the Arc, and is now motor-less. PSB, the (Ultra?)MicroBUD user, refuses to stop watching ASN long enough (jk, Pete... I think!) and is using a homemade H-H mount, not a motor. Others are in various stages of setting theirs up, it seems, and have various dish sizes, from 40"+.

I have my H-H motor already set up. I have a perfectly clear view of the arc, from about 55W to 150W (a bit further than PAS9, and past Echo1,2). I've ordered a new Patriot 1.2m dish, and an offset C-band LNB. Within a week or two they should be here. I plan on taking about a zillion pictures (ok, maybe a few less) of every aspect in setting up the MicroBUD; from attatching the 120cm to the SG2100 motor, to lnb placement (I plan on having the best of EVERYTHING, using three lnb's and a 4*1 Diseqc switch), to most efficient placement of the scalar ring, etc.

I am also planning on making very thurough listings of what I recieve from every satellite, and at what signal/quality. Understand that these numbers will be fairly useless in comparing them to other recievers (I use a notably stingy Twinhan 102g DVB card) but it'll give you a good idea of what the stronger signals are, and what ones are the tough ones to pull in. I also have an analog reciever here, and will include those findings (for each satellite) in the list. My only downfall is I have no blind scan reciever. At this point, seeing as my dish/lnb are already ordered, I'd swap the entire contents of my satguys classifed ad (one or two items have been sold, I need to update it, but most of it's still accurate) for a Blind Scan STB. I know these can be had for a measly $60 sometimes on ebay these days, but I'm very strapped for cash. Contact me if interested!

If it all turns out as nice as I hope, perhaps it could get shoved in the FAQ section with a ton of disclaimers about 6' being the minimum for C-Band, this is just a fun hobby, your results may vary, blah blah blah ;)

I'm using an old Primestar dish with the c-band lnbf PSB sells. So far the only satellite I'm getting reliably with my Fortec is Anik F1 at 107.3W. This is the one that has the ASN channel that PSB watches all the time. I kinda like it too, gotta get that Canadien Idol fix. :) As I write this I'm getting a 81% signal and 57% to 61% quality watching ASN on tp 2B. I get 77% signal and 72% to 74% quality on tp 9B home of the ever popular toothpaste channel. Newsworld International comes in at 77% signal and 58% to 60% quality on tp 10b. There's a few other FTA channels, there's a lot of encrypted channels, a few test patterns, and a few channels that I get audio but no video. I haven't played with this nearly as much as some of the others, so my numbers may be on the low side. I also suspect the guys with the 1.2m dishes are getting stronger numbers too.

Incidentally, to date, I haven't been able to get anything with my Twinhan card on C-band unless it's slaved to the Fortec. I need to do some more testing, but I think it may not have enough power to drive the c-band lnbf. This may be due to the length of cable run, or the card itself. At this point, I'm not sure.

Very interesting, thanks for that. I will see what I come up with and report back. I'll have two C-band lnb's to try out with my Twinhan. I have tested the line voltage on my Twinhan and it's actually a bit over "standard" voltage.

anything that is on C-Band DVB that is free you should be able to get. Obviously there are some weaker signals out there (just like with KU band), but you should be able to get the free DVB stuff

Yes. Mostly. ;)

I'm making a catagoric list becuase the MicroBUD concept has two inherant problems; not being "large enough" to get the weaker signals, and not being "large enough" for full near-satellite rejection. I like to imagine these issues as big trees in my LOS that are in the neighbor's yard; I can't cut them down, lol. The analogy being, I'll take what I can get, and I know there'll be blockages. In this case (stretching the analogy along) everyone will be using the same view through the trees :D so I figured a list of what comes through and what's blocked will be helpful.

I think a list of what people get should be good (we should probably stick only to things listed on lyngsat so some of the cooler stuff available doesn't get exposed in public).

Some signal's are impossible to get becasue they are weak and/or satellite next to it has a stronger signal on same (or approx. same) freuency. There are alot of signals that overlap and you can't lock them in. The strongest signal I get is 85%+ on couple of satellites(not counting Anik as everything there is pretty strong).
