Remember WildBlue Communications? The Denver-based startup, which is delivering
high-speed data service to rural areas by satellite, claims to be enjoying
stronger-than-expected consumer demand for its broadband products since launching in June.
In a letter issued late last week, WildBlue CEO Dave Leonard predicted that the company
will wrap up the year with more than 25,000 subscribers despite "capacity constraints in
certain areas." Leonard said the company is now "updating" its retailer network "to
match the increased demand in these hot spots" and should resume full customer
installations nationwide next year. With more than 600 retailers signed up in rural parts
of the U.S. now, WildBlue aims to double this total by the spring.
Leonard also said WildBlue, backed by Liberty Media, the National Rural Telecommunications
Cooperative (NRTC) and Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers, is earning rave reviews from its
initial customers. In surveys, he said, nine out of 10 subscribers said they would
recommend WildBlue to a friend or family member.
