Seems like alot of you want Sony to fail. Not gonna happen but still there seems to be alot of haters out there. Most support Microsoft, the big genie here in the US. Is this some sort of Japanese hate going on here?

Without Sony, you basically will have no competition in the console market. Please do not meantion Nintendo -- they are basically an inhouse company that charges out the yen-yang for third parties to make product on their game machines. That is why it has been along time since you have seen alot of third party titles on Nintendo machines. Since Sony bumped them out of 1st they have not done well. Perhaps the Wii will do better but at $50 a game this system is going to be expensive to play too.

Microsoft on the other hand has the computer world by the throat. They get sued on a regular basis by everybody for stealing ideas and implementing them for free in later versions of windows (talk to Netscape about that) and seem to want to do the same to the console market and you guys support that?

Strange, and I thought competition was good for America's gamers. Guess not, of course you could not buy a PS3 and in a year from now we will be having differant discussions about the differances between systems. And you can still HATE Sony -- spend your money somewhere else -- Bill Gates needs another billion!;)

I do not hate Sony. Sony does do some crazy things that I do not like, but I will probably buy a PS3 either end of this year or beginning of next. I will not buy an XBOX. I might buy the Nintendo. Sony and XBOX games seem to be turning into huge productions with very little game play. I think the Nintendo will probably have better playing games.

Some departments in Sony drive me crazy, specifically the movie and music departments. They try to get companies to standardize on crazy things like MD and Memory Stick. But I do like the PS2 and will get the PS3.

Joe,

once again you showed your ignorance: Nintendo sells far more than Sony. They own the combined market.

I don't hate Sony, but I have a stong dislike for them. I just don't like their pricing policies on all their products.
Do I want the PS3 to be sucessfull ? heck yes... will I buy one? heck no. But MS and Nintendo need competition. If we have Sony hardware fail, and if the Wii ends up sucking, then MS is left and were back to the early 80's of one game system with no reason to innovate.

Tks, show me some sales figures -- please show me some figures. I am willing to bite on this one but without figures your claims about Nintendo being number one is BS!! They do not even rank number one in Japan!! So, whose sales figures are you going by?

Well I'm far to lazy to find data for the last year, but if you look at just Junes NPD data in this thread http://www.satelliteguys.us/showthread.php?t=71239

the DS alone outsold the PS2 and PSP combined by 60k units thats US sales only I believe.

If you add the game cube and GBA you get 833k vs 533k that could be a bit skewed because I think the DS lite came out in june so I have no idea how much it would impact it.

Joe,

Japanese hatred? I think Japan sells its fair share of TV's and cars here.

I myself own a Sony 50" TV yet I have the 360.

The who will win Blu ray- or HD DVD poll was a virtual tie. So where does this anti-Sony anti-Japanese accusation come from?

I think before we ask about sales figures you should perhaps put a little effort into proving your premise of "a lot of you people seem to want Sony to fail" and then casually tossing the race card out there.

So before we take your premise for fact..try backing up your premise. Show us where a.) a LOT of you people seem to want Sony to fail. and b.) where in those instances has race been brought up.

i see where boston area dtv is coming from. i don't think really is against sony.

i am kind of wierd with sony. for some reason, i don't like them, but i don't want them to fail either. every once in a while they put out a good product. heck, i even have a sony tv as well, but try to stay away from the rest of the electronics because i feel most of it is junk.

I hope Sony and Microsoft AND Nintendo all remain close in the "Console Wars", because if they do we(the consumers)are the winners. I'm not buying a PS3 and I own a 360 and will buy the Wii, but I hope Sony sells a buttload of those things for all our sakes.:)

Well, let's see...I don't hate them, I just don't trust them.

Marketing lies. Sony says one thing but gives another. Remember all the CGI tech demos when each console was announced and what did we get? PS1 looked better than the Nintendo systems. period but looked nothing like the CGI demo. PS2. Remember the Gran Tourismo demo? Does the game look even close to the demo?
PS3... First we were told a PS3 with all of those mentioned features would cost around $500. A year later we have 2 models. The $500 model just so happens to be the stripped down model lacking the Wi-fi, HDMI, and memory card reader (not important to me but to some may be). Looking at the retail prices of the wi-fi and price difference between the hard drives, the $100 difference is not $100. If you can buy a wi-fi card for less than $20 retail then the OEM wi-fi chip has to be less than $10. Price of a memory card reader is less than $10. Retail price difference between a 40 GB drive and 60 GB drive is about $5. If Sony can put HDMI inputs on ALL of their current TVs then they can surely put one on ALL PS3's. Why not put the same hard drive on each unit. Then the $5 price difference will probably become $0. Hey then that would be the same unit. Did they not get the hint that no one liked the 2 different 360 packages?

The price difference for all the extra features is negligible and should have been standard like we were told last year! If you are going to announce what someone will be getting then they need to deliver. At OEM prices I am willing to bet that the price difference between each is less than $20 but they charge $100 more.

They also force a technology down our throat which has an uncertain future. They are using it to promote their propriety technology with the gamers in hopes they dont experience deja'vu ala Betamax. Blu-ray is nice but is way too expensive. Microsoft isn't forcing anything down our throats. If we don't want HD DVD then we don't buy the drive. NO CURRENT game needs more than 9 GB of disc space so blu-ray isn't necessary for a gamer.

So its not hate its just distrust.

mikley28 I completely agree with you. I don't hate Sony, I just hate the fact that the quality is almost zero in many of their products.

I actually support the almost dead MD platform, which I think is one of the best products that I've owned. Think of this, way before we had the CD-R technology at the reach of us "POORS" we had an erasable digital recording media. But what Sony tried to do?, replace the CD platform. At that time I had almost 2,000 CDs and I wasn't willing to trow that to the obsolete thrash can. They should tried to replace the cassette but at the time they realized that, it was too late. The Md support was lower that ever. In Europe was very sucessfull.
They tried to kept it alive with the MDLP which I still use, but the MP3 players and the Ipod put it to rest.
Well another fine products that Sony have are their HD based MP3/ATRAC3(I own a nw-hd1). The smallest Hd based players on the market, great, great product. A format quality comparable to the ACC from apple in terms of audio quality and compression. The fact that this product was manufactutred in Japan said it all. I bought an Ipod just to have the video option.

For almost 12 years I worked at Sears and I experienced how the product quality was decaying. Once all their products were manufactured at Singapoure the quality went down the drain.

Talking about the PS3, will I buy one? Well I'm almost certain that I will, but damn the price incertainty keeps confusing me. Between the gas prices and new taxes were I live I have to stop buying new toys.:(

I don't hate Sony just their ways and the fact mentioned by several before my post of forcing their technology and slowing/affecting the standardization of new technologies.

Just my 2 cents...

Tom

Can you say "root kit?"

Gotta agree with this one for sure!

In addition, Sony used to mean quality which justified (to me anyway) their premium price. This is no longer the case, as their quality has dropped, but the prices remain premium.

I will most likely pass on the PS3....

Does anyone here remember why Oddsworld Inhabitants went with the XBOX over the PS2 for Munch's Oddesy? The hard drive in the XBOX was why. They needed more storage space for their game and they did not believe that the PS2 without a harddrive could do their game justice. And they still had to take stuff out to make it fit the Xbox platform. What if the game developer did not have to limit their game because of storage or delivery media? What kind of game could they deliver? What kind of gameplay and graphics? Just thinking outloud here.

Space is not the issue. If you give a programmer more space he will use it BECAUSE he can write sloppy code and make it fit. Slowing down load times. If you keep space reasonable programmers will have to make clean code.

Agreed!! The CGI cinematics are nice but PC game devs and xbox game devs use the game's engine and assets to produce the cutscene. Which makes it possible for a huge game like GTA san Andreas to fit on less than 4.5 gb. I can see it now with the Blu-Ray drive and PS3 developers.... they fill up the disc with CGI cutscenes and the game really lasts maybe 10 hours of gameplay. I would rather play the game not the cutscene.

No, that wasnt the reason they switched. Did the game come ON the hard drive? NO!! They even have Munich's oddesy on GBA so storage space can't be an issue. You can only fit so much on the disc.

I think the real reason is that the XBOX graphics are better than the PS2 in most games. I still prefer the xbox version of the game over the PS2 when I have the same title on both systems. The game may run better with the hard drive because it can cache assets onto the hard drive and decrease loading times.

If we didnt limit them it would be hard to say. Some developers would make better games and some will make the same games we have now with sloppy bloated code. Limiting them teaches them to work smarter not harder. As alot of games are getting better, MS solved the problem with XBL. Now a developer can create content and sell on XBL so replay value of a game can skyrocket.

I bought the Xbox because MS was commited to Dolby Digital in all thier games and the superior graphics. Well I have to say that Halo has something to with it :D, but games like Rally Sport Challenge, Forsa Motorsports and a bunch of others along with the Xbox Live kept me very satisfied with my puchase.

It's called combined sales, Joe. And N sells more than anyone in overall.

I would have to see some figures to believe that. I cannot find good numbers, but from what I do find:

2005 Console market(hardware and software) $9 billion
PS2 is about 70% of console dollars -- $6.3 billion
GameCube is about 15% -- $1.35 billion

2005 Portable market(hardware and software) $1.4 billion
GameBoy is about 60% of portables - $.84 billion

So just comparing PS2 (Not PSP) with all of Nintendo that means sony has $6.3 billion and Nintendo $2.29 billion. Nintendo is not exactly the leader in the combined market.

There was a conference just after the GameCube and Xbox release in which Sony made a presentation and claimed they had sold X number of units while GC and Xbox only Y number. The difference was very significant. Later that day Nintendo presented the combined number from all series of consoles, back to the NES. The PS2 lead paled in comparison to how many units Nintendo had made since the 1980s. Perhaps that is the difference you are thinking of.

Is Nintendo really the console market leader?
