Why no channels 1000-5500 ?

LOL... Okay, I'll bite:

It has to do with convenience when changing channels.

The 4-digit channel numbers have been enabled on the Dish receivers from the top down. Back when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth, Dish channel numbers went from 100-999.
Channel chart from 1997

But as channels were added, Dish started to run out of room. The first set of 4-digit channels became the Sky Angel channels and public Interest channels in the 9700 and 9400 range.
Original Dishchannelchart from 4/23/2000

The reason Dish started with the 9000 range had to do with being able to quickly change channels using the 3 digits. If you tune to channel 290, when you hit the 0 at the end the channel changes on the receiver right away. However if you try channel 950. when you hit the final zero the receiver sits and waits several seconds waiting for you to push a 4th digit. If you notice the 900 channel range has always had nothing but music channels and a few Sky Angel channels so most subscribers would not have been too inconvenieced at first.

It wasn't until the end of 2001 when the 8000 block was opened up for local channels. It took at what was on the 800 block before that you'll see that it was the local channel that were being moved anyway. So no real inconvenience there either. Same goes for the 7000 block later. After all those moves is when Dish started to add international channels to the 700 and 800 blocks. Before that they were in the 600 channel range.

It wasn't until last year that the 6000 and 5000 block were opened up to direct access. But most subscribers still only have to push the three numbers and the channel changes immediately since most channels are still in the 100-499 channel block.

I hope I explained that okay. :)

See ya

PS: For a while there, there were 5 channels in the 4000 range as test channels but no Dish receiver could ever directly (or inderectly) tune to them.

4000,11,KCNC
4001,11,KMGH
4002,11,KUSA
4003,11,KXAS
4004,11,WBBM
4005,11,WFAA

They seem to be phantom channels.
There are EPG entries in the EPG stream for all six of them with complete program listings.

Years ago, I had contact with someone who actually had these showup in the EPG on a 5000 receiver. It was a one-time occurance.

They used to show up on the "hidden" guide on the 7200 also. Those channels haven't changed in 5 years! I think that is why I removed them from the channel chart.

Thanks for looking them up.

See ya
Tony
