Why I went with a 612 over a 722

I weighed the pros & cons ($50 to move up to 722, pushing back my install date) and decided to stay with the 612. Tell me if my logic is bad here.

* I am only getting the HD package. I know they can downscan the signal so it will work on other TVs, but I really don't watch other tvs in the house. They are also still hooked up to the old $11/mo cable and so they're fine like they are.

* I have never used PIP even with TVs that had this feature in the past, so I'm not going to let that sway me.

* I can hook up an external hard drive (boy, I need to start researching this) and I have some larger drives sitting around that would more than triple my storage space pushing it well beyond what the 722 has..and since I'm not having to buy anything here, that $40 activation fee is actually going to allow me to get a great deal more storage which I think I'm going to want with all HD channels only.

So now my question is what do I need to know about external storage?

- Am I ok if stick a nice external USB 2.0 7200RPM 500GB drive on there?

- Is there any problem in doing that?

- Do I incur another $40 charge if I ever remove it and put another drive (larger?) on it?

- Can you daisy-chain additional drives or are you limited to just one?

I guess I need to dig up some info on this. Is there a FAQ staring me in the face here that I've ignored?

PS Thanks again dishstore and all the helpful folks here on the forums! :)

DOH! I see the "Technical Forums" now. Wow. I have alot to get up to speed on it looks like. Maybe I should put on a pot of coffee tonight & start reading.

Quick question: I saw 'archive bugs' listed. Can you actually archive HD recordings from your external drive to like a DVD-R??? That would be insane if you can.

Boy I've got alot to read up on...

Apparently 612s do NOT count as 2 tuners.

tired of babysitting the DVR!
