I've noticed this on a couple channels now.. All of them are HD channels, this was just the latest occurrence on SyFy (it's been like this all night since I've had it on, several different shows/movies). I've also noticed once or twice on movie channels like Starz. It's really obnoxious because on an HD feed you can't change it to crop to get rid of the windowbox. Native mode doesn't help either.

So is this coming from SyFy like this or is it something at D*'s end? The entire feed is being letterboxed (as evident by the position of the bug - on a regular letterbox/OAR movie the bug falls partially into the bottom bar) and pillarboxed. However, the commercials/credit bumpers are just pillarbox (they go top to bottom 4:3), and some commercials and the station IDs do go fullscreen. So it should be SyFy's fault, right?

If it's what I think your saying, it's not a HD show being shown on a HD channel.

It could be an hd show, but the channel doesn't have the hd rights to it. I think that's what happens when Enterprise is shown on SyFy.

That is because you are not on the HD channel. I drew a red box around the HD on the logo. The SD channel, such as what you are showing, does not have HD after SyFy

you're right DK...never noticed that on scyfy (the only thing I usually watch on there is WWE Smackdown) :)

That may be why JerseyMatt didn't see this particular show in hd, but they do picture frame some of their shows on the hd channel, like Enterprise.

I have syfy on now, and its different than the pic on the OPs post.

Mine has SyFy hd unlike just SyFy.

Same thing says Haven, All New Tonight 10/9c

No letter box or nothing. My only question is do you have a receiver that shows both HD and SD channels. my H23 only shows HD if in HD, and no SD channel. Same as my HR24, but my HR20 shows both HD and SD version.

But I was on the HD channel (I have SD duplicates hidden plus custom list). Had it been the SD channel I could've just set it to Crop and been happy. But the crop/stretch settings have no effect on an HD feed. This was a letterboxed program in a pillarbox on the HD channel. It's the same as when you have a 4:3 show like Lets Make a Deal on CBS HD or old episodes of South Park on Comedy HD, and it can't be stretched or cropped to fill the screen - you're stuck with the pillarbox.

As for the logo, I don't know what to tell you, but it definitely wasn't the SD channel.

Yeah the show that's on now (Merlin) is fullscreen, and it has the Haven/SyFyHD bug. But last night there were a couple shows and a movie that were windowboxed and had the different logo. But when it cut to commercial, there was a mix of fullscreen and pillarboxed commercials.

Not sure about the shows, but the movie that had the issue was a SyFy original.. So don't know how they couldn't have the rights..

Two more examples.. WWE is displaying in HD (see the WWEHD bug in the top left), but they use the regular SyFy logo..

And Kitchen Nightmares on FoxHD has the same issue. And I know this is a Fox show shot in HD, so there's no good reason for this to happen.. Like I said, it wouldn't bother me half as much if the windowbox could be cropped off, but it's really annoying.

Nope.. If you look, the banner goes side to side, beyond the pillarboxed regions, and to the top, beyond the letterbox.. It happens on all the TV's too, I just keep taking pics of this one because it happens to be in the room with the computer.. :D

The rasslin one is correct. Right now I see just the SyFy logo (not the HD one) yet I'm on the HD version

kitchen nightmares was in HD and showed as HD on my 2 Fox stations I can get (Minneapolis via sat and Mankato via OTA)

Interesting.. So that means it's my Fox affiliate sending it in letterboxed SD?

Looks like it

The Mankato Fox only shows Fox network programming in HD. The rest is black bar hell.

Still doesn't explain the Syfy issue though. It's possible he could have been on the SD channel but doesn't D* block the SD channels when the HD feed is available? Another thing I noticed is that he's also using the new HD GUI which is still in CE and that it could be a bug that D* has to fix.

I have one of my R22's with the new HD GUI and one with the regular software and both displayed SyFy like that.

unless you hide the SD dupes both channels show in the guide and you can select one or the other

No, I'm telling you it was NOT the SD channel. It said SyFyHD in the banner. If it were the SD channel I would've been able to put it on Crop and been done with it. And it happened on all my receivers, including the H21, which has never been touched by CE.

Believe me, it was coming in that way. It was the exact same issue that happened with Kitchen Nightmares.
