I am confused why so many members hide where they are located. It's not like anybody is doing anything illegal, are they? Is this a carryover from the old years when it actually was illegal to have a TVRO C-band system? Often, when a location is not known, this affects the quality of answer that we can give when questions are asked.

Ever hear of stalkers?

It is a serious issue with the internet. It is also prudent to be very careful with who you share your exact location, and certain information. Lots of nuts in the US of A, and it seems to be getting worse every day. You'd be surprised how easy it can be in some cases to track people across the 'net, and to find out quite a lot of information about them if you really want to.

My location is 'rounded' to the nearest full digit. Still is many, many, miles away, for what Primestar31 said. ( it's somewhere within 3300 sq. miles of it) But putting your general location* and equipment used in signature does make it easier, in many instances, to answer a lot of questions on the board. *Nova Scotia or Michigan is close, and general, enough. N.A. is a bit too general IMHO.

Of course I'm talking about a general location such as maybe the state. It's wise to not use a real name or address. But so many have no indication at all.

Kinda like the ol days of MIRC

I'm also annoyed when people put their state motto, bird, flower, or something else only locals would know.
For instance, the term "SoCal" means Southern California to us who live here.
To anyone out of state, it's meaningless gibber.

I'm not interested in what little city you live in.
But if there is a big one I might have heard of, within 50 miles, that'd be great!

Sometimes people will indicate something like "north east corner" of their state.
That makes me lookup a map, pick a city, and work from there.
It's an extra step I don't need, if trying to help.
Same with zip codes: I have to look it up.

Recently, someone used GPS coordinates.
I looked 'em up, thought he lived in Los Angeles, and gave bad advice on OTA programming he couldn't get.

When newbies ask what else there is to watch besides 97w, I love to mention 30w.
But ya gotta live in the eastern 3/5ths of North America.
?.

If you leave your Ham Radio call sign, any one can track your exact address. I have looked up all of the Satellite guys who have there call letters in their user name.

That's exactly why I don't post my call sign anywhere.

google maps has a nice closeup of a home i tried to make extremely private. Sheese.

no neighbors and i still should not go outside to take a wizz just in case google is updating that day.
well, i do anyway, but then i check to see if google got me...heh.
that closeup of my house is just wrong.
