Scott, do you still have your Mogul? Looks like someone released some files for GPS on the Mogul! I'm still digging through it.

New Sprint ROM anyone? GPS Works! - xda-developers

Been having a ball with this phone... made a few custom ROM's with several apps preconfigured and setup just like I want it. It's a pain to edit and convert all the CAB files but it's great to have everything built in and working smoothly.

I'm off to go read up....

I just got the XV6800, this past Thursday. Been busy making the upgrade from the 6700. Verizon model. Yes, impressive!

Cost- MSRP $540 according to local Verizon store but for two year users of the 6700, it was only $150 after all discounts and rebates.

Interesting factoids-
The 6800 has a new processor- dual core 400 Mhz that makes it snappier than my 416 Mhz 6700 running at overclocked 630 Mhz.
Has lots of storage ram so more apps can run on the internal faster memory than the 6700.
Memory limit of 2Gb mini SD card has been upped to at least 4 Gb micro SD card. I have one of these installed I picked up at Office Max for $39 with a coupon discount.

Bad news- I decided with all the savings I could afford to upgrade all the software and accessories from the 6700. Most of these were not usabale on the 6800 due to WM6 vs. WM5 on the 6700. Few new features of this new software.
The hardware is LESS feature rich than the older 6700. such as the cradles are bulkier and only charge the phone. Extra boxes to carry to charge a battery plus phone. The audio out (Headphones)requires a big fat dongle rather than a simple mini adapter.
I hate the power button on the side as I keep bumping it and shutting it down. The 6700 had it out of the way. It doesn't yet support Rev A EVDO even though the phone is capable. Verizon still cripples the contacts list so you have to upgrade the list one at a time or pay them this monthly fee of $1.99 for their backup / upgrade service. The new service contract for Verizon, now lists in big bold print you are not permitted to use the network to watch video or listen to audio (podcasts). So far, they have not really enforced this but I suspect with all the big bold legal stuff they are getting ready to enforce restrictions. Of course if you pay their PPV fees and get their lame video services, you can use all the bandwidth you pay for. Very expensive. If you buy the pay by the Mb is is $15 a megabyte of bandwidth of download. Do the math, it is a PPV rate that only Bill Gates can afford. Why have EVDO A if all we can use it for is e-mail absent of html! PIE still can't do web sites with flash or java content. Get Opera!

So, while the XV6800 still isn't perfect, it is a bunch better than the 6700. Sprint's Mogul, I understand is only a few months ahead of the Verizon ROM and is rumored to have Rev A now, doesn't scare its customers with legalease on bandwidth or restricted web use. I also looked at the phone itself and the MOgul appears to be a bit flimsy in the KB slide compared to the XV6800. I'd bet that Verizon recognized this and made some mechanical improvements in the case. But for me, the BIG issue of Sprint is the service. I have interviewed many people using the Sprint EVDO over the past year and it seems it is faster in some communities but unfortunately, the footprint is but a fraction of what Verizon offers. In Vegas at CES, Sprint users were having problems with lack of or intermittent service, especially with internet, but my Verizon was capable of slinging at minimum of 600 Mbs anywhere. I was using sling box often during the show. But footprint always improves with time. Maybe in two years Sprint will be same as Verizon and hopefully will set a standard of not hitting their customers up for $15 per Mb of media download.
Overall, I'm glad I held out for the Verizon version. I'm fairly sure this new XV6800 will keep me happy for the next two years I contracted for. The bandwidth cost scare, may be another story, however. If Verizon persists in its quest to restrict users of the EVDO service, that could very well be the deal breaker and I move to Sprint.

Side note- Interesting how att and T-Mobile don't have this problem. Why? Simply the speed they operate at doesn't support the content we can do on Verizon or Sprint.

The latest update has EVDO RevA and GPS working. I flashed over to the rom tonight and it is working fine. DCD over at XDA has created ROMS for the three CDMA carriers. Cool stuff....

I read they were slow responding. Is that true? How is yours working? with Google Maps?

I'd love to be able to get mine working without Tom-Tom outboard BT GPS and maps and use internal with Google Maps but I suppose I'll wait for an approved version from Verizon.

Funny thing about Rev A on the PDA- EVDO is working fast enough as I find the screen size for web surfing more of a detriment than speed. Now on my laptop, I welcome EVDO A. Been using Rev A since last summer and it makes slingbox sing!

If I'm in the house it is slow to respond but I understand that. Works great, I was playing around with Live Search and Google maps and it works great!

Approved version? What's that? ;) I flashed the stock ROM the other day and I freaked since it was missing all of my customizations and programs that I usually cook into the ROM.

I installed the rom on Friday Night.

It is AMAZING, I love the Sprint Navigation program but I am not paying $10 a month to use it. Windows Live and Google Maps work fine for me. (I have NAV built into my cars anyways)

The Revision A is getting me about 1.6Mb/s.

What are you getting on the upload?

WMWifiRouter has a new version that's just a simple CAB file install. It sets up the ADHOC wireless connection for you. Just install and open the router app and hit connect. Then attach the laptop to the wireless the phone is sending out.

I have a Sprint HTC Mogul, but I have not had an opportunity to update the ROM. Hopefully it will be a quick and painless process. I have a Garmin, but my wife has started to use it...which now means that she has a Garmin. The GPS would come in handy at times but, like Scott, I am not interested in paying $10 a month for this feature.

After being with Verizon Wireless for almost 8 years, I really have no complaints in my service area since making the switch over to Sprint. Just as long as I never again have to call into customer service. Plus, we're moving to the Dallas area which has excellent coverage.

Any idea if this (GPS) will eventually work on my wife's Spring HTC Touch?

Thanks for the info...:hatsoff:

If you use Telenav then it is $10. Google maps and Livesearch works fine for me. I don't need a constant GPS like I use in the car just tell me where I'm at and give me a bearing when I need to.

There's also the TomTom PDA software but I've heard it is pricey.

Where do I find it? Its the only thing I have not setup yet since upgrading the rom on the phone.

Get the one that says CAB with network settings. I just installed the CAB and loaded the app. No configuring, it was great. Of course if you want encryption on your wireless connection you'll need to edit the adhoc connection.

Its not working for me, I get connected, and I can ping the router (phone) but cant get out past the router.

I am getting DHCP from the phone as well.

Its just not routing now. (I can still get on the internet on the phone)

I have a Sprint Mogul also thanks to this site telling me about the Sero plan. Have mainly the stock software that came with it but have loaded some additional purchased software (games, weather).

I was going to wait on the lastest upgrade for a week or two to see if any bugs develope. Was about to load the last update that was to improve BT but then people were having problems so I am a little gun shy.

Weird... I tried it the other day and it worked fine.

Here's the long thread.. I didn't do any special setup or registry edits at all, it was really install and play.

I held out on a mogul for a long time.. just when the update we've all been waiting for finally hits.. I hold off again to see what the 800w will bring. If the 800w disappoints in any way I'll be sure to grab a Mogul that day. I'm glad to see this forum is so tech savvy. :up

digiblur-

I have the Tomtom and it works very well on my older 6700. I haven't loaded it on the 6800 yet.

While all my cars now have excellent GPS systems (Denso version) The cell phone GPS comes in handy when I travel and rent a car.

The TomTom has one "feature" I don't care for and can't shut it off. It auto zooms based on your speed. Go fast and you are zoomed out so you have no map detail. Go slow and your map zooms in and you have no wide map range which is the main issue. You can expand it but then you leave the navigation. Maybe its something I'm doing wrong but that seems to be the worst part of it. The best part is the integration with the PDA's broadband in that you get DOT traffic reports enroute. If there is construction on the interstate up ahead, I get a warning. I can also access a DOT highway camera in certain parts of the country so I can see the live traffic up ahead on my route. That costs a monthly service fee so I cancelled after the free period.

Scott- my Rev A in Las Vegas was doing 2.4 MBs in the hotel room on my Dell laptop with the built in Verizon EVDO board. I get those speeds in NYC and Washington DC Locally I get what you reported, 1.6 Mbs. 1.6 Mbs will easily do 3 live video streams, 2 security cameras one with sound and also sling box. I recall just 12 years ago I used a laptop tethered to my motorolla flip phone and was amazed at getting e-mail from the back of a Limo out of Pittsburgh by dialing aol 800 number.

Update- I just paired the TomTom GPS receiver with Google Maps on the XV6800 and it worked perfectly! I'm not sure I will be loading the TomTom software now. I will be trying out Google Maps later today in the car to see how it responds. If fast enough, I'll forego the TomTom software.

The LiveSearch with the built in GPS on the 6800 works well too. Speech recognition works pretty good.

Over XDA Developers they've also released a few roms for the 6800 based off of WM 6.1. The major thing I saw was a few PIE changes, threaded SMS, task manager, and it's very snappy compared to 6.0.

Loving the built in GPS on the 6800. No extra parts and pieces to carry.
