Which receiver?

Needing to purchase a unit. Now, I know that everyone has their favorite, and thinks thiers might be the best, but wanting to know what brand / model would be good and reliable to start out with, and won't break the bank. Looking at Ku initially, and possibly expanding to add C-band in the future.

I'm leaning toward a unit that has multiple outputs, as just an HDMI might not serve the purpose; want to have options. Also, recording would be nice, so I see that USB is probably the way to go by connecting a backup drive? Is that how the DVR functions work? I'm sure that the units with built-in HDDs would be kind of pricey.

Don't know of unit that has a built in HDD. You will need an external drive or high speed USB stick.

Not factory-provided, but internal. Amiko A3 (relatively expensive), some AZBox models (don't even get me started...)

Would like a variety, HDMI would be nice for future, but for now, RCAs.

The Amiko A3 only supports HDMI out, but most receivers include a RCA composite output and also include onboard Dolby audio decoding.

I thought, looking at the back of the Amino, that it has an AV out, and includes the 1/8 to RCA triple red, white, yellow?

The Amiko mini HD SE has AV RCA out, but the Amiko A3 only has HDMI output.

I think most receivers including the AMIKO MINI HD SE have both hdmi and composite (yellow, red, and white rca), but about the only modern receivers I know of that still offer component video (red, blue, green rca) is the MANHATTAN RS-1933 and GEOSATPRO HDVR1200. I still need component, so I always confirm the output type with the seller prior to purchase since some receivers like the old openbox came both with and without component.

The microHD has HDMI and red, white, and yellow(composite) for outputs. It's fairly inexpensive at about $125 and it has a usb port to add a hard drive or fast usb stick to record to. I've had mine for almost 2 years and I like it very much. It doesn't connect to the internet though like the Amiko A3 or some of the other recievers out there.

I would go with a microHD or Amiko mini SE there about the same price on eBay give or take a few bucks.

Other choices if you need component video RS-1933. I would don't recommend the dbs6100. I normally only recommend the HDVR-1200 for glorystar folks "however that may change been testing a beta firmware that adds IPTV function"

Must sellers I know have a refund policy so if you try and don't like it send it back and get a different model

Remember that the RS-1933 is no longer in distribution.

I would avoid the Novatek based chipset STBs (SR1, X2 Premium, HDVR1200) as the SD (standard definition 480i/576i) picture quality is not very good when deinterlaced for display on any HD TV. The ALI chipsets (mini HD SE, microHD, RS-1933) have superior SD picture quality.

Yup, there are still some new stock 1933's around on the interwebs. I would rather have a used rusted front panel busted 1933 anyday then a dbs6100 if I needed component video
